Well I guess I will try to take it apart, it's gonna cost 60.00 for the guy to look at it. I haven't been to impressed with this unit since day 1. Can you recommend a place where I can view a picture to get an idea as to what I am looking for?LOL

I noticed on a previous post directions to take apart but I think it was a different model then mine. Thanks for your help

This is a common problem with this model. I usually occurs after a jam in which when removing the jam your fingers go too far under the cover towards the front and dislodge the encoder strip. Its the strip that sits just above the carriage and tells its location (ie where to print). 30 is obstruction of the carriage and the 50 is cant find the purge station. It is an easy operation to relocate it after pulling it appart but a very dificult task while it is still together and you will probally put the machine out of alignment. An easy operation for your local service centre and it shouldn't cost too much if out of warranty. One of my favourite faults to fix as its easy as.

If the repair guy charges you any more than the $60 he is ripping you off. I was going to put some pictures here but my file sizes are too high but I believe I can describe it pretty well how to pull it appart (I done it enough!!).

Open the scanner cover. Near the blue lever that keeps the scanner cover there will be black cover that is clipped in and another L shaped one more towards the centre. Unclip both and remove. Undo cables underneath four cables and a earth on left hand side and flat cable under the other (careful with the flat cable). Unclip the blue lever and you should be able to remove the scanner assembly.

Control panel next. 3 screws and the rest is clipped. Pull it up and towards you. Carefull of the three connector underneath. Disconnect cables and remove control panel.

Remove the jam access cover at rear.

From here you need to get the black cover off. 5 of the bigger screws and one smaller one at the front left hand side. It is clipped at both side on the bottom (use a small flat blade)

and two clips at the top front (one on the top above the ink cartridges, similar on the other side). This can be fiddly, don't worry you will get it eventually. There should also be a red cable to disconnect.

Now you can see the carriage (printhead). The encoder strip will be on top. It needs to go it between the sensor. Clean with tissue if it has finger prints.

Put it back together and it should be sweet.

The instructions for removing the cover were excellent. I would probably not gotten the case open without this advice. In my case, cleaning the encoder strip did to solve the problem. Probably, a new printer is in my future. Thanks for the advice.

Multi-Function Center MFC-240C All-In-One InkJet Printer: i get the message "print unable 36" displayed on m...

Error code 36 is generally because of a paper jam that was not cleared. Remove the rear jam cover (the plastic cover in the back center of the machine)and the paper tray and check for any pieces of paper. Sometimes just a scrap will remain, but it's enough to cause the machine to not work.

Once you've replaced the covers, if the jam code does not reset, turn the machine off and then back on.

Message unable to print 50

Machine Error 50 either means that there is a loose object inside the machine (usually piece of paper), or that there is a mechanical error which would need you to have the machine sent to service.

Brother MFC-5860CN print unable 51 error message

Normal 0 Could have a corrupt driver.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

What is 'print unable 51' never had a paper jam!

Do the following:

Print Unable
XX
The machine has a mechanical
problem.
—OR—
A foreign objects such as a clip or
ripped paper is in the machine.

Open the scanner cover and remove any foreign
objects inside the machine. ( You might try cleaning the scanner glass.)
If the error message continues, disconnect the machine from
the power for several minutes and then reconnect it.

Try this and let me know what happens. Binary Bob

Brother 240c

I got one of these from a friend who couldn't get theirs to work. I got an error message that alternated between "print unable 50" and "print unable 30". I called Brother and checked on-line for a solution. Nothing helpful. So I took it apart, (after unplugging it from the power outlet), just a few screws and snap locks really, wasn't too hard. When I got the black case, the body of the MFC, off I found a clear guide ribbon that rests in a track on the back of the print head resting on top of the print-head assembly. I put the ribbon back in the track and reassembled the MFC. I think a bad paper jam pushed the ribbon out of the guide track on the print head . All the errors are gone. There are no instructions for the dis-assembly, but its not hard.

a18573f.jpg The screws, (8-10 screws in all), aren't hard to find, just the two screws hidden under the open hinge as shown here. You have to unplug some circuit connectors too. This method is best done by someone comfortable with taking the MFC apart.

Or if you have small hands, you could probably get it to catch with your fingers in the opening for the print head as shown above, but I didn't get it repaired that way. Good luck. Post the results if you try to fix it.
