Question about Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Flatbed Scanner

3 Answers

The scanner head just keeps moving up and down the scanner, stopping for a few seconds and then starting again. Trying removing software and installing again - no luck. Tried downloading new drivers - no luck, it doesn't seem to be communicating with the computer.

I have contacted another repair company - charges are ridiculous (for just the estimate) please help!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had trouble with this scanner too. After just a year bulb went out. In case it happens to others, there is no way to get a replacement bulb except paying ridiculous amount to Microtek support. JKL Components was able to create a new bulb for me. Worked perfectly. Call Larry: 818-896-0019 ext 124. Very nice, and very helpful

I work for a book bindery, and we have 6 9800XL all of them have had to be replaced twice for that same problem as well as scanlines, and will have to be replaced again fairly soon as they are starting to develop problems advice is go with another brand like epson.  They are expensive, but it's cheaper in the long run to buy one of them than to replace a Microtek 5 times

The charges repair companies use are always rediculous. Though I seriously think we are talking about a hardware defect. Since you already tried both new software or new drivers you should contact the manufacturor of the scanner for a solution.

Look up their official site and look for a support area of a contact address (phone or mail).

I hope they can provide an answer to your problem.

Perfection 2400 scanner fails to scan; just clicks

The only thing that usually causes a scanner error of this type is either a scanner failure or the transport lock. Locate the lock and make sure it is in the unlocked position. Lock and unlock a few times leaving it in the unlocked position then power the scanner off and on again.

Is your lock/unlock mechinism underneath in the unlock position?
I have a scanmaker 4800 and am assuming ours have basic similarities.
Mine has 2 round magnets that are visible when the glass is removed.
Once they fell out of place when I took it apart and I had to reglue them in. Is anything in the pathway of your carriage rail?(I don't know what else to call it) but a little wheel on the right side slides up and down this rail and maybe one of those little round magnets fell out and is blocking it.

Magtek check reader stalled in the middle

First. Check equipment connections. Verify that your equipment is set up the way it should be.
Second. Try a multitude of checks for testing purposes, if they still don't work it's the check reader.
3. If the check is stopping half way, I want you to use compressed air to remove any debris along the path of the reader.
4. Now, try it again. If it still stops halfway through, then it's a bad wheel. That wheel becomes overheated and looses it's rigidity. It's a passive wheel and contacts the check and compresses/guides it against the account scanner. But if the wheel is loosing its rigidity, it will fail to scan checks and fail to wheel the check in correctly.

Problem with new set

Sounds like the lock-switch is in the locked position. This is on the bottom of the scanner. Move the lock-switch back and forth a few times and then leave it in the unlock posotion. Try scanning again.

If you are scanning a book, it may be too heavy and putting enough pressure on the scanner that it is preventing the scan head from moving fully. Try scanning with nothing on the glass to see if it does the same thing.

1670 no image scan

Same Problem (WinXP System). I found leaving it off when not using it fixes my problems. (Its like the scanner light overheats or overloads the light receptors and it just sees white from then on, no matter what you do on the pc side of things). Other problems while stumbling into this "fix" include WIA drivers loaded which will stop scanner working properly, and finally scanner drivers seemingly working when USB cable in connected to another port other than what it was installed on but no image is shown (Not 100% sure if it was same problem as detailed at top)

Dead scanner UMAX ASTRA 4500 (not 4450, but it was the closest model, so I posted it here)

BQ, seems like you've checked all the items. Have you (again) tried to adjust the head. The start position error and the lamp not warming up lead me to think something in that area of the head has been comprimised. Is the head assembly still on-track? Did your fingers touch the lamp? sometimes the oils in our fingers can cause the bulb to become damaged. At this point a repair man or a new one might be the answer. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
