I can suggest trying another keyboard (on the 1 in a million chance the keyboard is somehow the problem) but it is more likely the usb connection. Try a different connection (and try the keyboard on another machine). If the USB connection is proved to be a problem you can buy a 2.0 usb board for very little....less expensive than replacing the motherboard which may have a component that is getting hot and intermittently (as when it gets hot) dying on you temporarily. If the "dying" problem is after x hours of use this makes some sense. USB software would not be the problem as software (with some exceptions Mr. Gates) either works or does not work.
