I have ibm deskstar 20GB. Problem is that i want to connect it as an external drive through usb connector. It detects but no partition is shown in my computer. i try all jumper setting define in manual...

In Windows 7, you can use Disk management to detect and create a partition on this drive if necessary.
Steps: 1. Connect your external drive through a USB port.
2. Click Control Panel - System and Security - Create and format hard disk partitions (under Administrative tools)
3. Your drive should appear in the table below. Select the external disk and Right Click on it. You will be presented with several options (Create partition, Format, etc.). Select whatever is applicable in your case.
4. Your external drive should now be detected by Windows 7.

Combining two partially full hard drives

Yes, your plan is feasible.

However, any 20GB disk-drive has a warranty that expired *YEARS* ago. So, that disk could "crash" at any time.

So, consider buying a brand-new PATA disk-drive, which comes with a 3-year warranty, temporarily disconnecting the "old" drive, connecting the "new" drive, installing Windows onto it, and then making your "current" disk-drive into a "slave" disk-drive. Reconnect the "old" drive, and copy all your "data" from the "old" disk to the "new" disk.

Note that if you buy a SEAGATE/MAXTOR disk-drive, their MAXBLAST software can automatically copy "everything" from the "old" disk to the "new" disk, and will expand the partition from 20GB to the maximum size of the new disk. Very slick!
Then, disconnect the "old" drive, and boot from the "new" drive.

My computer cant find my external hard drive

Sounds like the drive isn't working, but the next step is to try it on another computer. If it doesn't show up there either, then the drive is faulty.

Slave Drive not recog in my computer but it is disk management with no drive letter

A quick thing to try Is
remove the 80gb from ide cable and power plug and set the 20gb back as master.
boot into windows from 20gb 1 time ,
then shut down hook the 20gb as a slave and the 80 back up as master
Allow windows to find new hardware , "watch closely down by clock ". It will tell you when windows has finished and will say you might need to reboot before new hardware will work properly
After rebooting Both should show inside My computer
Good Luck I hope this helps

Maxtor External 500 GB Hard Drive

Hi, 1. "Is the data recoverable?" Yes but the manner by which it can be recovered can be either very expensive (their are firms whose specialty id data recovery) or none at all if you do DIY (do it yourself) or worst case not economical reasonable but recovery possible. I would assume that your would want to try DIY. 1.1 Run diagnostic on the external drive using scandisk, Norton Disk Doctor, Partition Magic's ChkDsk and/or Check Errors. Recovery can be done using a recovery software such as GetDataBack; or 1.2 You need an external desktop PC, a working knowledge of computer hardware. You have to disassemble the external HD and remove the actual HD. Physicall connect it to the 2nd PC (desktop) as a seconday Master either by IDE or SATA as applicable. If detected by the desktop PC in the bios, you should be able to work on it even if with errors; 1.3 If mechanical problem or otherwise, you may want to check out this posting > Hope this works out for you and/or give you some ideas. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.
