Question about Creative Labs ZEN Vision:M Digital Media Player

Firmware reload I have been trying to reload firmware on my Zen Vision:M. After it erased the existing firmware, I connected it to the pc, and even though the pc recognised the zen, the firmware upgrade application didn't detect that my player was connected.

I have tried to perform the reload on another pc, but it does the same thing. The PC recognises the Zen; the Zen recognises that its connected to the pc and says "docked", the firmware upgrade application from Creative keeps saying "your player is not connected, please connect your player"; so I cannot upgrade the firmware.

I am using the downloaded firmware that I downloaded from Creative's website. What is the recovery tool and where can I get it?

  • need_my_zen Jan 25, 2008

Hey, I got therecovery tool from creative's site; but all it does when you run it, is basically try to download the firmware upgrade file. The exavt same one that I've been trying to run. And It also doesn't work.

  • need_my_zen Jan 26, 2008

Hi, I finally got the creative upgrade file to recognise my Zen. I had already tried the process on our XP desktop, but it had the same problem as on our XP laptop. But I just took a chance and tried it on our second XP laptop, and just like that it work.

The irony of all this, is that I had initially tried a firmware upgrade so that my Zen could dock on my Vista laptop. So after all this drama, I finally get the firmware to upgrad, but still my zen does not dock on my Vista laptop. Any advise?

Make sure you have media player 11
If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
Download recovery tool off creative's website.
go to my computer > click on hardware tab >
click on device manager button > in the is next screen on the bottom should have>>universal serial bus controllers
(write these down just in case it cant find them)
right click on them and uninstall
reboot let windows reinstall them

Also told Microsoft hotfix causes this problem try uninstalling the last hotfix
If that doesn't fix it try the USB cable

Recovery mode

If you Zen player is frozen or not responding You can follow these steps to go to recovery mode:

Detach your player from the PC if it is connected, and turn off the player. If the player stops responding, you can reset the player. To reset the player, gently insert a thin object into the Reset hole located below the power switch. Press and hold the Play button while powering on your player. When the player displays the Creative logo, release the Play button.

It will display the following options:

Clean Up:
Scans the player and removes invalid links from its music library. Does not affect music files themselves.

Format (All):
It erases all content! Save a copy of your player's content before formatting.

Reload OS/ Firmware:
Erases your player's firmware. DO NOT select the Reload Firmware option unless you have access to a PC and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to install.

Reboots the device.

You can follow any of these steps or all of them one by one to restore your device.
Hope this helps..

I have a creative zen m vision which is not working if I try to reload firmware I get a message harddidk problem - how do I proceed

1 HD damage could be done when you drop the Zen and you hear noises inside, some times the display just shows the Creative logo and no more.
2 the display just show the Creative logo, no noises inside, you can tray to put in Recovery mode as mentioned in the other solution and then erase firmware then reload firmware, this firmware can be downloaded form creative page,
Before you go to all that trouble though try these steps:

1. Connect the device to the wall charger.
2. Hold the power switch to ON.
3. Put a paper clip into the reset hole.
4. Continue holding the power switch on until the Creative logo appears.
5. Select Format All from the Recovery Mode menu. (Note: THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA FROM YOUR DEVICE! - but it's better than buying a new device)
6. When the reformatting is done, select Reboot from the Recovery Mode menu.

Creative zen microphoto v0.0.65

If a problem is occuring with the firmware, then just go onto the CREATIVE ZEN website / and select the model of your creative mp3 player.. once you have selected the modell it will then scan your mp3 player to check what it is required and then reccommends the downloads listed. However it is vital that your mp3 player is connected to your pc via usb lead.

Stuck in recovery mode--would love to avoid buying a new mp3

I had the same problem as your and it stopped working yesterday. After search for helps and now it is working again after I reloaded the firmware. But unfortunately everything is gone. You have to reload your musics again. You can try this out: 1) go to creative labs website to download the "Recovery Tool". 2) at Recovery Mode of your zen there are options: Clean Up, Format All, Reload Firmware, and Reboot. Try out Clean Up first if it still not working then try to Format All. After that try the Reload Firmware. After you done the Reload Firmware. 3) Shut down your Zen and try to connect it to your computer. Now your Zen will automaticlly power On and computer will recognize it as a drive. 4) Open the Recovery Tool you have downloaded at creative labs website. This tool will detect your Zen and follow it's instructions: It works with my windows Vista. Well, it works for me, I think it will work for your too. Good Luck!
May God bless.

Reloading firmware on mp3 player

try downloading the MP3 player recovery tool from Creative's website (the tool contains the latest firmware update available -- 1.15.03). Plug your ZV+ into your PC, run the program and let it update the firmware. Then format, reload your music and try it.

Zen vision m firmware problem

Dear All this problem is caused if the computer has windows media player 11 installed. I googled this for days trying to fix it - & was relieved when i finally sorted it - it's very easy. Just do the following.
Use a computer that has XP (either pro or home edition) (forget about vista....). go to add/remove programs - uninstall windows medi player - on my PC it does a roll back to WMP version 9. There's also a program called "Windows media format runtime 11" which comes with WMP11 & you need to uninstall this too - otherwise it still won't recognise the player.

Then restart your PC. Then make sure you have downloaded the lastest firmware version - just google it - trying to find the right one on the creative website is not easy - their website is poor - there are quite a few other places you can download it from.

Then I clicked the "reload firmware" option in the recovery mode (I had already deleted it 4 days ago). Then when your PC has restarted plug in your Zen, it should come up something like "MTP device recognised". Now when you double click on the firmware downloaded to install - it it will recognise the player & you can click the upgrade button. It does the upgrade & puts the firmware back on the ZEN. I got a message saying "firmware upgrade failed" at the end although when I started the player - it booted up as normal & I was able to reload & play my music.

This sure beats the "send it back to John Lewis, pay 60 quid & wait 6 weeks for it to come back " option - if like mine it's out of warranty

Zen Vision M

If you reset it and it goes back to just the zen screen, then I had this problem once too. You need to go to recovery mode (which is still possible).
  1. Detach the Zen Vision:M player from your PC , and ensure that the unit is off.
If the battery is too low, charge the battery fully before continuing
  2. Slide the Power switch towards the Power icon vision_m_reset.jpgand hold the switch in the Power On position.
3. Push the end of a pin-like object (for example, a straightened paper clip) into the reset hole,
press gently and remove.

It will display the following options.
Clean Up
Scans the player and removes invalid links from its music library.
Does not affect music files themselves.
Format (All) Caution! Erases all content!
Save a copy of your player's content before formatting.
Reload OS/ Firmware Caution! Erases your player's firmware.
DO NOT select the Reload Firmware option unless you have access to a PC and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to install.
Reboot Reboots the device. Here's the link to the site where I got the info from. (it's another forum). Good luck!
