Use MySafe to back up the files stored on the Ethernet Disk mini Home to
an attached USB storage device. This way, if files on the Ethernet Disk
mini are damaged or accidentally deleted, you can restore them to their
original locations. There are three main steps to using MySafe,Connecting an external USB hard drive,Backing up files to the external USB hard drive,Restoring files to the Ethernet Disk mini (if necessary) Before you can back up files, you need to connect a hard drive to your
Ethernet Disk mini via the USB port on the back. Use a hard drive that is USB 2.0 compatible. While connecting an external hard drive make sure your Ethernet Disk mini is turned on and connected to your network.Turn on the external USB hard drive.Connect the external hard drive's USB cable to the USB port on the back
of the Ethernet Disk mini, just like you would connect the external
hard drive to your computer.Confirm that the drive is
properly connected. Log in and click on the Administer HipServ link.
Click on USB External Storage under System. To back up files, navigate to the file or folder you want to back up to
the external hard drive and click on the disk icon in the "Backup"
column of the file list. When you back up files to MySafe, the
Ethernet Disk mini duplicates the file path in MySafe so that everything
you back up is organized in MySafe just as in its original location.
So, if you copy a file from MyLibrary, a MyLibrary folder will appear in
MySafe, with all folders leading to the backed up file.
Always click the Safely Remove Drive button on the USB External Storage
before unplugging your MySafe external hard drive. Wait for the
interface to change and for the Use Drive button to appear before
disconnecting the USB cable from the Ethernet Disk mini. Failure to safely remove your external hard drive before
disconnecting the USB cable can cause data loss and/or damage the drive.
Always use the Safely Remove Drive feature when disconnecting an
external hard drive.
This is because there is a connection problem between the external drive and the computer. If you have changed cables to no avail, you can open the casing of the external drive where you will find the hard disk inside. Unplug the two cables connected to the harddisk and replug it after a minute. Then try again. If it still does not work, then you need to buy just a usb enclosure and plug the harddisk there to be able to use it again.
The hard disk inside it has probably died. Take it out of the case and put it in the pc directly - if even now it's not responsive then it's surely dead - junk it. if now you can see it then the electronics if the case are dead - junk it and buy a new external case.
1. the usb connector in the PC may have a broken board contact needs soldering or replacement. 2. there may be a broken USB cord to the external usb drive 3. the electronic controller in the USB case may not be working. 4. A new case may be needed with a new controller.
Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the LaCie on a different
computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit, and not a computer system problem.
There are two possibilities:
The LaCie USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk
into a new enclosure. New Lacie are SATA, but double check the hard disk
connector to ensure.
The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data
recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than
$800.
If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.
If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.
A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be LaCie.
Check if your LaCie is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.
You can enter the bios on bootup by pressing a special key to force your computer to go into BIOS mode. What key this is varies by computer, often it is F8, F10, sometines F11. Anyway, use the key for your computer, and change to boot modus to not first boot from USB.
I know this is an old thread, however if it helps any one try this: Zippys power supply failed for me also. The problem here is your case support USB 2.0 ("A high speed USB device") and your port is only USB 1.1 ("plugged into a non-HI-SPEED usb hub"). This will not give adequate power to the drive. So use a y-cable (http://www.toshibadirect.com/images/ui3/accessories/toshiba-usb-y-cable-ba82010-300.gif) and connect one end to your casing and the two pins at the other end should be connected to two USB ports. (get it at http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/adet.to?poid=438342). Another costlier way is to upgrade to USB 2.0 by a card like this http://www.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp?category=1&lang=1&mode= or even better a USB 3.0 card : http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=lGYmelQ8mJvPtYTv
