Question about HP ScanJet 4850 Flatbed Scanner

Can open HP Document Viewer-Scan a New Document - Scan from Scan Doc button
Dialogue box popup - The Application is in Use
Dialogue box popup - hpqscnvw encountered problem & needs to close
Dialogue box popup - Unable to communicate with HP scanning software

Until this week, the scanner was working for the past 12-18 months without a problem. When starting up a few days ago, the HP software began to ask me to insert the disc so that it could initiate.
Running Windows XP SP2
I have run RegCure and several spyware Programs, (Adware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Terminator & Super Anti Spyware) in an effort to clean my PC from a malware attack (Ziob)

Had exact same problem. Went to HP site and they said to check "add or remove programs" functions (in control panel) and if there are multiple copies of HP software to download their fix. I checked, had multiple copies, downloaded patch and all worked well again.

Billy,unplug the scanner.go into device manager and remove/uninstall all drivers for the scan jet.reboot computer.go to hp site and download new drivers/set-up.reboot computer.hook scanner back up to pc.pc shuld see the device and load drivers .if not go back into device manager and find/click on scanner.tell it to update drivers it shout do this automaticly..but if not point it to the new drivers.update.if you still having a problem or i have confused you contact me here.RICHARDM69

HP advises that, on some systems, the scanner hardware may get into an error state that will keep the scanning software from finding the 3200c ScanJet. If your scanner still isn't found after installing this driver and software update, please follow the directions below:

I had the same problem. I tried various compatibility settings (without success). What fixed it for me was going to the Compatibility tab and checking the "Run this program as an administrator" box.
