SMART failure possible hard drive

I was using my computer when it just shut down. Now all I have is the BIOS screen (Dell Inspiron 1000) that tells me that there was a possible hard drive failure and that I should do a back-up asap. I dont know how to do a back-up in BIOS. Can you help?

thats a hard drive problem you have to take the hard drive to a tech to recover the data by doing a dirty installation and then you have to replace the hard drive becoz it might give you a smart error and you will not be able to recover anything

Computer will not boot up.

That means the BIOS is looking for a floppy drive that possibly doesn't exist.

Go into the BIOS by pressing F2 and where it says diskette drive on the main screen, highlight it and choose the option to disable it. Then save changes and let the machine reboot. This time it shouldn't look for it and it will go thru into windows.

Had this exact problem on the same model (Dell Inspiron 1000) laptop. Solution was simple: remove battery, problem goes away. I guess the battery was so far gone it was hanging the BIOS on startup.

Screen comes up stating; self monitoring system

The error refers to the SMART system (read more about it).

Your hard drive may be getting ready to fail or you may have received a false error message (which can occur). If possible go into the bios/CMOS and disable the SMART system so that you may be able to boot normally. Once booted you need to make a backup of your data immediately.

If you are unable to boot the machine even after disabling SMART you may need to replace the hard drive and hook the old one up either externally (the preferred method) or as a slave so that you may backup the data on it.

The symptoms you described are normally common motherboard failure signs.

Try removing the ram and hard drive from the computer and then try booting the computer.

My Laptop Dell Inspiron

Check the disc for scratches, this could be a bad disc. However, I'm leaning towards another issue besides the hard drive being bad. Tell me what initially happened to make you buy a new hard drive. Hard drives aren't effected by the heat produced by the machine, so tell me what made you think it was heat that caused the hard drive failure.
