TV Will Not Start Occasionally

I purchased this TV on 8/24/2007 which was a Vizio 42" LCD TV with product number VIZIO 7782762. Within the first month of use, when first turning the TV on, the screen would not start with the first press of the power button. The TV would turn on and would produce sound, but the screen wouldn't start. Most of the time that this happens, I simply have to turn the TV off until it clicks (after a few seconds) and then immediately turn it back on. Once in a great while, I have to do that twice but that has only happened a few times. In general I would say that about 40-50% of the time that I have to turn the TV on a second time to get the screen to start. In the last few weeks the TV has actually not started correctly more often than not. What does this issue sound like??

The TV is refurbished so it is out of warranty, so I will need to troubleshoot it myself or pay someone to do so.

I purchased the TV refurbished from and it is out of warranty (purchased 8/24/2007). The TV also does not have any kind of video out so I have no way of narrowing the issue down.

I have the exact problem with turning on my tv. I bought my tv about the same time you did. We actually bought two, and they both have this problem. Now I have picture but no volume. Not sure what to do.

I was having same problem, then on 4/4/08 it went out with just a blue screen, with no signal, then it would turn itself off in about 4 seconds! Not to happy here! its 3 months out of warranty so no help from vizio. my buddy had the same problem a month or so ago with same tv GV42L HDTV. if your handy you could do it yourself, like i will when part gets in. saving some money! its the main board ***'y you can look it up at vancebaldwin or i would just keep using until the screen goes blue. Hope this helps

LCD TV's do not have a "picture tube" or "bulb".

You didn't say where you purchased it at. However, If the unit is refurbished by the manufacturer, it should carry a warranty just like new. I don't know how long that would be. It may be listed in your manual. Do you still have the receipt? Did you pay by credit card?

The problem could be caused by several things; a power supply issue, a LCD display issue, software/hardware boot-up issues.

Does the TV have a PC monitor jack or A/V output jacks? Try hooking up a PC monitor or A/V monitor. Now try turning the set on and off. Does the external monitor work every time while the main screen does not? If it works with the external monitors, you can then narrow down the cause.

Good Luck,
- Jim

Sounds like this unit is still in warranty. Have the service people come out and look at it. If you don't have a bill of sale, you should still have production dates on the unit.

I have a 42" Vizio

Your power supply is dead.
Power supplies can be purchased online for a couple hundred bucks, and replacement is fairly simple and requires only a screwdriver.
For those less tech-savvy, you may want to start saving for a new TV.

My Vizio LCD TV screen fades to dark. Sound stays on.

I w having this same issue when watching a Blu-Ray disc. I found it to be dependent upon what picture mode the TV was set to. By this I mean certain picture modes would cause the TV to dim during dark scenes of a movie. Changing the picture mode helped a lot.
