New power supply for my Dell Dimernsion 4550

I am looking to get a new power supply APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 ATX 500W Power Supply 115/ 230 V UL, CSA, TUV, CE. The main connector for this unit is a 20 +4 point connection, my current connection is a 20x1, are these two compatible? If not then could you recommend a 500W power supply that is compatible? thanks

A 20 + 4, and a 20 are industry standards. The latter for earlier mobo's and viceversa. I don't know (but I could possibly be surprised) of anyone that makes a 20 + 1....and more importantly you said 20x1 which equals 20. My suggestion is go with the 20 + 4 if for no other reason that it will come in handy when you upgrade (your old board or processor dies). As for 500w compatible power supplies check pricewatch.com....they list in price order hundreds of power supplies sold by many different companies. If unsure drop an email to one of the companies or use their free long distance numbers to make sure (I am already). One other item...500w is a lot of power...it is doubtful you need that much unless you are running a lot of equipment. There is a site on the net (and no I don't remember) but it is one of the power supply manufacturers where you can input you equipment and it calculates the wattage required. If you are a normal user, with an older board, 350w is more than enough in all probability and 450w would be enough for the foreseeable future. These manufacturers are touting 500w and up in the same fashion as disk drive mfg make bigger and bigger drives. As examples I have a 40 gb drive with 1000 songs, multiple operating systems, more software than 5 average users at least and I barely touch 18 gb. Bigger is not better...only more expensive...just ask all those soccer moms driving 80 lb kids to practice in 6000 lb vehicles at x miles per gallon at today's gas prices. Summary buy what you need with an eye on the future but (as always) the semiconductor industry goes (to the extent possible) in the opposite direction....wattage = heat, heat is no good for components, low power designs make sense....future boards, components and processors will take less power as they shrink the chip and anything beyond the current dual core processors (finally - I hated changing motherboards every few years to accommodate operating systems) will not be required by either the typical business or home user. My opinion obviously but I believe we have finally (less a truly reliable operating system) reached equilibrium. That's all (and probably too much)...have a good day...Tango

I am looking at a Dell Dimension 4550 PC for a friend and it won't boot up...i push the power button on and there is an almost orange/greenish light on the power button... no beeps no diagnostic lights are...


Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

The Power Supply is just an ATX form factor version. The common Power Supply form factor used in MANY desktop computers.
(ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to the size, and shape of the Power Supply's case.
Approximately 6 inches Wide, 5.5 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall)

HOWEVER, (Not shouting), there is an area of concern, should you try a Power Supply you may have available for a test, or purchase one.

It involves the wiring of the 20-pin ATX main power cable. More specifically the power cable's connector.

To explain view the standard wiring, set for a 20-pin ATX main power cable's connector,

Looking at the photo to the far right, observe the color code of the wires, going down into the socket holes of the connector.

Look at the Lock tab on the side of the connector. This will help you orient the color code of the wires, and their placement in the socket holes, to the chart below the photos.

The connector on the end of the 20-pin ATX main power cable, is a Male connector.
Where the wires go into the connector, is the Back of the connector.
In the middle photo you can see the Front of the connector.

The wires going down into the ATX main power cable's connector, end in a female metal terminal.
The connector on the motherboard, (Shown in the photo to the Left), has Pins.
The metal female terminals go over the Pins.

The pins are numbered. The color code of the wires match up to the pins.
This is shown in the chart.

Now look at Dell Support > Dimension 4550 > Technical Overview > DC Power Connectors >

The illustration may not be accurate. You'll have to compare since you have the computer, and Power Supply in front of you.

For a time period Dell was a Proprietary manufacturer.
Meaning they wanted THEIR parts used on THEIR computers, and ONLY THEIR parts.
They had the motherboard manufacturers make motherboards according to their specs.

One of the specifications was that the pins would be CHANGED around, in the motherboard connector for the ATX main power cable.

They also had Power Supply manufacturers make the ATX power cable to their specifications.

This means if a user bought an aftermarket Power Supply, the color code of the wires in the ATX main power cable would Not match.

Many users did buy an aftermarket Power Supply, and installed it.
Burnt motherboards, fried Processors, and graphics cards, resulted.

Orange wires are 3.3 Volts
Red wires are 5 Volts
Yellow wires are 12 Volts.
Black wires are Ground wires.

Guess what happens when you plug a 12 Volt wire into where a 3.3 Volt, or 5 Volt, or Ground wire is supposed to Be?
POOF!

My suggestion would be to look for a Power Supply that is an ATX form factor, is KNOWN to be good, and is compatible, for a test unit.
You, or someone you know may have upgraded to a better computer, and you may be able to borrow the Power Supply for a test unit.

Compatible:
Has the Correct power cables.
1) 20-pin ATX main power cable, OR a 20/24-pin ATX main power cable.
(20-pin connector that has an additional connector with 4 pins. Just use the 20-pin)

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable. (Also referred to as P4 MB, and P4 ATX 12V)

(Power for the Processor)

3) Enough standard 4-pin Peripheral power cables.
(Misnomered as Molex)

Also:
You can change the power wires around in the ATX main power cable's connector.
Change them around, in an aftermarket Power Supply's ATX main power cable's connector.

Bro change your power supply into a new one, becuase some of that problem occured in your power supply, due to power watts over load of voltages malfunctions.

Where is the fuse inside the power supply model fsp200


The unit is only 200watt and the fuse cost about $2,Thats if there one built into it,
The replacement power supply is about $20-00 NZD
Probably 20minutes to fix (for a novice) depending on their skill level and tools available,

BEST ADVICE Replace it

Power is something you dont want to mess with because it can kill.
The power packs are replaceable but people arent.
Be very careful and dont mess with the power.

That maybe a memory beep code. Turn it off and remove and re-insert the memory modules on the mainboard.

Yes you can replace the old defective power supply with the new atx but the problem is the size. It the size it fit to your computer nothing to worry because power supply now is almost the same output only the wattages changes.

PSU problem


The total connection is two part if you disconnect 20*pin one part then four part is other part. when you connect 20 pin in mother board .the four pin connect anther port. then the power supply is on.
