The Craftsman door is chain drive and stuck in up position. Pushing the button to close door does not move at all. There is a humming sound like the motor is locked up. The eyes are properly lined up and there are no obstructions in the beam path. I manually released the door from the lift chain and retried the power switch. The result was the same. It sounds like the motor is locked up. KenSouthBend
I found the chain extremely tight on the sproket. The mechanism had stalled hard against the stop bolt. I loosened the chain tensioner and the motor operated properly. Reset the limit adjustment so the mechanism stops a couple of inches from the stop bolt. Door is working fine now.
I just experienced the same problem. I removed the back cover and found the teeth on the drive gear completely worn down. I have not order parts since I just discovered the problem, but it appears gear & sprocket assembly kits are available from several different vendors from $15 - $40.
Before I suggest a solution, are you in an area where you get sudden cold temperatures? I've had the identical problem and it's nothing to worry about.

same problem...Trolley jammed into stop bolt. limit switch failed?
I am having the same problem - except the chain is stuck and my door will only go up 3/4 of the way...not enough to get my van out! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Yes, we're having a cold snap, but this is the first time we've had this happen to us.
I have exactly the same problem, and it is not a sudden drop in temperature. I also released the door with same outcome. The door operates quite quite smoothly when closed by hand. One anomaly was the chain is sagging quite a bit.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Door stuck half way open makes a clicking noise when the open /close button is pushed. Stuck in the locked position.
