Did you download the image to your computer? Was the image shown on the computer white also? If so, it is CCD sensor degradation. It will just get worse with time. Eventually the movie will mode will also show the degradation. Here's a site that outlines people's experience in getting this fixed:

I have a sony DSC-F717, and when i take pictues, the white colors on the image come out pink and other types the picture has like a green shadow over the picture.

Symptoms shows its start-up of CCD Imager problem in DSC-F717 and in few days, CCD Imager will not give picture data to camera circuit. CCD Imager is part which converts image in electronic signal and that signal / data goes to camera circuit for further process.
Sony will repair CCD Imager problem in DSC-F717 free of cost. Check Sony CCD Imager Support for details.

Dsc 717

Sounds like CCD sensor not working properly ( playback is always fine with images captured properly and sometimes the video will work fine too but 'noisy'image in normal capture mode ) and is a very common problem with this model. You are fortunate though because Sony replaces the faulty sensor free of charge, so phone them and inquire.

Pictures look blownout and have lines all along the photo.

Take that camera in anyway. I still beleive you have a CCD problem.

There is a difference in the way the CCD shifts out data when in movie mode and that might be why you still have a good picture.

I personally replace acouple CCD`s on the DSC-F717. And yes Sony paid us on behalve of the customer.

Be nice to the front-end staff when taking it in. It might prove a very good investment.

Good luck.

Distorted Viewfinder Only In PIcture Mode

Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.
