Image looks white in playback mode. recording in movie mode looks fine. help! the sony site says that it is only a sensor malfunction if the still and video images are distorted.
Did you download the image to your computer? Was the image shown on the computer white also? If so, it is CCD sensor degradation. It will just get worse with time. Eventually the movie will mode will also show the degradation. Here's a site that outlines people's experience in getting this fixed:

Please disregard the 'Busy' message which may appear on the LCD screen during MPEG movie recording in VX Fine mode. Recording and playback operations, as well as recorded data, will not be affected.
Seems your camera Sony DSC-T1 got bad ccd imager problem, as camera does not show live image to record and shows previously stored pictures fine in playback mode. Sony will repair it free of cost. Click Sony CCD Imager Support for details.

Sounds like CCD sensor not working properly ( playback is always fine with images captured properly and sometimes the video will work fine too but 'noisy'image in normal capture mode ) and is a very common problem with this model.
You are fortunate though because Sony replaces the faulty sensor free of charge, so phone them and inquire.
Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.
