Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer
There are 3 screws on the top back of machine, unscrew and remove top of machine. The wires come loose from spining, just ensure all wires are secure. I've been dealing with this problem for almost a year. Sometimes all I have to do is unplug and wait 30 seconds and re-plug, other times I have to wiggle the wires and ensure conection is secure. Yeah, $400.00 is an awful lot when you have already invested so much in a QUAILITY??? machine. I don't know why they don't offer a computer replacement package for this problem when its obivious that its thier mistake.

After several hours of research, I ordered a door lock, not hard to put in but that was not the issue, Yes I received a DL F code, but reading others comments I took off the top of the lid and traced the DL3 connector and unplunged it several times and my machine works fine... again I believe it's just a connector issue where the CCU board is not making a good connection with the compression pins.
Find the CCU on the top of the machine, find the DL3 connection and just unplug/replug it several times. This may answer why someone said HIT the machine on the back right would help.

Hi - I also started having this problem with my Kenmore HE3. After selecting my wash cycle etc and hit start I get a delayed series of clicks and then get a FdL error code on my digital read out. I have found out that the error code stands for "door lock". Yesterday I had a Sears technician/repairman come out to my home for 65.00 to take a look at it and he said that it is in fact the door lock error code but he has repaired others and the only way to repair the problem was to replace the computer in the machine which would have been 425.01 with parts and labor. He further explained that there was a two year manufactures warranty on the part and the manufacturer extended it to three years and of course I am in my fourth year. I whined that I did take a PM for two years and it doesn't seem right that after paying as much as I did for this washer that replacing the computer seems to be a faulty product or manufacters defect and seems that it should have been recalled or replaced for my washer and he said no that I am past the three years so like anything else I would need to pay to repair it. Needless to say was not happy with the outrageous cost and customer service that he provided. I found it a bit untrustworthy that my washer is giving a "door lock" error code, and the technician is saying that I need to replace the whole computer in the machine in order to fix the problem. I did not accept the work on the estimate that he provided. Lucky I also have been able to get the washer to start after unplugging it for a while and then plugging back in. Not sure how long I will be able to do that before it goes completely out. If anyone else has had any better luck on getting this problem repaired/fixed for a reasonable solution would love to hear about it. The more I have dealt with Sears repairmen/technicians the more I am convinced that they are scam artists. In the meantime I have this expensive Front Loader that is malfunctioning!!

I had the same issue. Found it to be the door lock mechanism was jammed. It was locked, however the relay was not getting a signal that it was locked. Since the door was locked I had to first figure out how to unlock it. Found that if I took the top cover off, I could reach down inside the unit and at the bottom of the door lock mechanism was a protruding piece of plastic. Pushing UP on this caused the door to unlock. I then (after rescuing the clothes trapped inside) removed the door lock mechanism. This was simple, three screws and three wire harness connectors. Disassembling (carefully) the mechanism showed a piece of plastic from the internal slider mechanism had come loose and lodged in between the contactors. So while the door was locked, it wasn't getting a signal to the computer that it was locked. Luckily this small piece of plastic wasn't necessary for the operation of the unit so reassembling it and reinstalling it fixed the problem. I plan to order a replacement unit JUST IN CASE because there is another plastic "wing" on the other side of this slider mechanism and once it breaks off, the unit won't function at all.
ALL this for a .02 cent piece of plastic.
The internet saved me a hundred dollar service call though, and I'm sure if I called Sears they wouldn't try to fix the broken unit, they'd just tell me I needed a new one.

I JUST FIXED MY DL FLASHING PROBLEM. I WENT TO THE LOCAL PARTS STORE (LA MESA APPLIANCE). I BOUGHT A NEW DOOR LOCK . I UNPLUGGED ALL THE CONNECTION THEN PUGGED THEM BACK IN AND IT WAS FIXED. $51 WAS THE TOTAL COST.

The only thing I could do for a temp fix was select "whitest whites" & just change the settings (ie. hot to cold, 2nd rinse to single rinse, etc.........)

I had the same problem with my HE3t. The solution was to unplug the unit from the wall and wait about 30 minutes. It was an electrical glitch. Then plug in,press "drain and spin", then "Start". Let the machine purge all the water and then you can examine the wash to see what needs to be done. The machinre will operate OK.
