Yamaha RX-V660 Receiver No lcd(?) display

My yamaha receiver no longer shows any display. It also seems to get fairly warm in it's new cabinet which is a little cramped(bad?), or are the Infinity Quantum jrs too big? I have also had some static and distorted sound when switching sound modes (which I cannot see due to display failure) but only in brief bouts, maybe related to over heating? It is a 16 year old receiver but I'd hate to let it go. Any help? Is it worth bringing to a repair shop? Thanks in advance. -Adrian

Removed the bulb without too much effort, where might I find a replacement? It was plugged into a board (plug was labeled cb105) with a red and white wire going straight to a really small bulb. Thanks for the help on heat management. Would Radio Shack have this bulb/wire/plug assembly? Thanks again, Adrian

Just get a 4 inch ten dollar fan at staples .
Place it on top , rotate the fan facing down into the air vents and all will be cool.

Yes, this receiver is a good one. Alot of gear from a few years ago will still outperform new gear. And why change something if it can be repaired. It most probably has a blown backlamp to the lcd display...some models so easy to change that they just plug in!!. This is quite common and easily fixed. Heat kills electronics. If you wish to keep the old girl going i suggest trying to increase the ventilation. even by getting it into the coolest place in the cabinet. The top of the rack of gear is always best for your amp to get rid of the heat. and try to put some extra height(with say a 2 sticks of wood) under the feet both under the amp and any bits of gear that may sit on top while taking care to to block the ventilation holes. if the amp uses a rotary function selector switch it may have dirty contacts that are causing your crackling problems. A spray internally to the switches contacts with CRC 2-26 will sort that.

You can get the direct replacement lamp from Yamaha spare parts direct or from a Yamaha service agent in your locality. I don't know where you are in the world, let me know and I can get the exact info for you. I strongly suggest replacing it with the same type of lamp, as the plastic assly that it fits into can be damaged by the wrong type.

My Yamaha RX-V390 receiver when volume turns up it turns off

Does it display something on LCD? Maybe you have connected speakers with wrong impendance and the receiver is overheating.
Check the impedance of speakers, it should be at least 6 ohm. Also check the receiver manual if it has settings for impendace (6 or 8 ohm).

I thinking of bying this Sub, but I have an old Yamaha RX-V660 receiver. Can I conect the Sub to that receiver and how?

Not very easily. Your receiver has no Sub Output. You really want a sub that supports hi-level inputs such as this: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-633
Then you can run your front speakers through the sub.
The Kef site hints it may be possible to run high-level inputs to that sub by using RCA adapters.

Yamaha RX V 657 - No Sound Output, and No input detection

Bad DSP chip. The only other possibility is if you have the "Direct" on. On the front of the receiver it's a small button. Also make sure your "Speaker Select" A/B is "on" You will see it on the display, it's also a small button on the front of the receiver. If all this is correct and you still have no audio, it's a bad DSP chip. Not worth repair, it's 400-500 repair. Not very common in a Yamaha RX-V series, but I have seen it. I'm a Yamaha Dealer. If you need further help, post a comment and I will be glad to help you further.

Display panel does not light; sound is ok

It may not need repair. if you have it hooked up to a TV, by video, s-video, or component. Press the menu button on the remote and you can see the main menu of the unit on the TV. Navigate the menu up/down/left/right/enter until you get to "display". You should be able to turn the display of the receiver on/off. If you don't have the manual. http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Documents/YEC/Stereo_Receivers/Manual/RX-797_e_U_p.pdf That's the PDF from Yamaha. I haven't used this particular unit, but that's the way it's done on all the other series. ie. RX-V or RX-Z. Hope this helps

Yamaha RX-V663 - HDMI doesn't work.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a workaround:
  • as you posted, audio out of the DVD goes to the receiver;
  • HDMI out of the DVD goes to the Schaub Lorenz LCD.
Even if it were a compatibility issue or HDMI processor issue on the receiver, the above should get you going.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Display is permanently "off" on the Yamaha RX-V620

Sounds like the LED that lights up the display has burnt out. An easy fix, if you're not afraid to take the front panel apart and resolder a new one.
