Inoperative focus control

I have a DSX 102 meade telescope that I cannot focus. The focus knob turns several revolutions from stop to stop, but there is no focus.

Re: Inoperative focus control

I'm assuming this is the Maksukov-Cassegrain telescope. Turning the focus knob CW should get you focus at infinity by moving the primary mirror away from the eyepiece. As you turn the knob it should move in and out relative to the real of the scope. If that's not happening the focus screw may have been turned CW too far and no longer be catching the threads in the rear plate of the scope.

You may be able to get it to rethread by holding the front of the scope toward the ceiling and turning the knob CCW. Attached is a photo of what the scope looks like under the rear housing. To prevent the focuer shaft from turning in too far the knob should be firmly seated agains the rear of the shaft. I think on this model this is a friction fit.

I am a novice and was looking at the moon when it became cloudy. I ajusted the focus several times and turned too far. I have now lost the focus range and can't seem to find it again. What can I do?...

During the daytime-- point it at a distant object and turn the knob right and or left until it comes to focus. Use the eyepiece with the largest number written on it. It's easier to focus.

If I look through the eye piece and see my own eye am I missing somthing?

You are NOT in focus-- turn the focus knob . You may need to turn it several times either to the right or the left. Use the eyepiece with the LARGEST number written on it and practice focusing during the daytime on a distant object.

Just got a Meade ETX 90 and cannot see anything thru the eyepiece. I've tried the focus screw, lens covers are off, and flip switch is in correct position. Anyone know the answer?

Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the TOP of the scope eyepiece holder.

Practice focusing on a distant object during the daytime. It may take several turns of the focuser know.

Also check the TINY setscrew on the side of the focuser knob. It may be loose and need tightening so it will GRIP the focuser shaft.

ETX 125 Loose image when focusing

The ETX family (and other Meade LX telescopes), use a moving mirror system for focus. The focus knob moves the main mirror in and out. For smooth operation, there is some slack on the central tube that allows the mirror to rock slightly as it moves. That is a normal condition, and the movement is magnified, the greater the magnification of the eyepiece.

Can't get to focus.

I think that the focus shaft has become un-attached by turning too far. Try placing the telescope facing directly upwards and start turning the focus knob clockwise. A little vibration on the tube will help the mirror to settle downwards. This may get the threaded rod back into the knob.

Focus Issues

Try tightening the grub screw that fastens the knob onto the shft that it turns.

Better still, buy a flexible extended focusser which makes focussing much easier. Check on eBay for "Meade flexible focus"
