I had the exact same problem, was playing call of duty4 online turned it off, woke up next morning and no games would load up. so i rang game-station where i brought it from before christmas and told them, all they said to me was bring it in and we will replace it with a new 1, they could'nt offer any advice on how to get it working :( so i dont no if they have come across this problem before and sony have just told them to replace it. but i didnt want to loose all my saved data, or my online rankin with call of duty so i asked them what they could do, they said they could swap the hard-drive i have atm, and put it in a new machine but they dont no if it will carry or my data over, and id properly loose all my online rankings, and rating. so id have to start all over again which will realy anoy me.

Hi, the problem you have is an internal one, the drive laser head does not seem to be reading the discs you may need to get the console replaced, or get the laser head cleaned, it may be a dirty laser head or a damaged one. If you can replace the laser head or drive yourself then it may work out cheaper for you.
It's a Sony
defect with the blu-ray lasers. They only last 1-3 years with average
use. If your PS3 is less than a year old and you still have the
original receipt Sony will repair the problem for free. Otherwise
they're going to charge you $150 for the repair. You can reach them at:
Unless you have a technical background in
electronics there's nothing I would suggest doing. A firmware update
and or CD /DVD cleaner disk will do nothing for your problem. I've
fixed more than 100 PS3's with this exact problem so I know exactly
what I'm talking about.
Have u tried cleaning the laser, and not with a cleaning disk as the lense on these are concaved and the cleaning disk only gets the edges, this would mean removing the Blu-ray unit stripping it and cleaning lense with cotton buds and lense cleaning fluid.
i had same problem. ps3 was reading and then not reading discs off and on. finally it totally went out and would no longer read any type of disc. it would still play demos and get on web etc but wouldn't read any type of disc. u need to call sony's 1 800 # and they will repair it for free if u have a proof of purchase under a year if no i heard they charge around 150. if u purchased it from a gamestop and u don't have ur receipt u can call them and have them fax it to sony cause they take ur info when u buy one from there
im very sorry to hear this it has happend to me aswell. actualy im on my third ps3 all had the same malfunction. its nothing you can treat from the out side you can try to reformat and restore system defaults but it had no effect on any of mine. you may be able to fix it your self. try this link i realy hope you can fix it.i have read many post on this same thing your not alone im on number 3 because of this awful malfuction it could be very simple to fix like a dirty lense or the lense slider is stuck. i dont recommend useing a cleaning disk they dont make any for blue ray lense.the lense is very sensetive good luck dont lose hope.http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?forum_id=1&thread_id=73887&start=60
Try a different disc. Get a good quality DVD lens cleaning kit. Follow the direction on the lens cleaner disc carefully. If this does not solve your problem, you will need to contact SONY at www.playstation.com , as the phone lines are jammed. Too many of the PS3 consoles are dying. Sonce you lost your receipt, you need to possibly contact the store where you got it,or check your Credit card company for information. Lots of times the Store will have backup of the receipt. You may have to go to both the Credit card co. to get info to take to the store.
