Wireless Signal drops to 24 on 54 G Verizon router and then nothing works

This is a Verizon Fios Router. In my home I have tried to use the wireless on this router but it would always drop to 24 speed even though the signal was full bars. When this happens everything stops. No webpages. So I tried turning off the wireless and connecting a Linksys 54G router and using the router on it. I still use the DHCP on the Actiontech though. Again it connects at 54/full bars but after a while it will degrade to 24 and then nothing happens again. I have tried two different routers with the same results. This seems to indicate that the problem is either with the Actiontech or my Fios. I have the same results on four different laptops. All different models, different wireless devices. Again, seems to point at the Router or Verizon. Verizon is no help. Distance from the router makes no difference. I can be 5 feet away with no obstructions and get the same problem. Currently my solution is that I have two Linksys Routers connected to the ports on the Actiontech. They are located about 15 apart up on top of bookshelfs neare the geographical center of my home on the first floor. When the speed drops on one, I connect to the other, and badda bing I am back up to 54...for a while. All laptos are running XP SP2 and use the windows wireless configurator.

I have been trying to figure this one out for about 6 moths so any help you can offere would be appreciated.

Re: Wireless Signal drops to 24 on 54 G Verizon router...

I have had similar problems with my FIOS/Actiontec wireless network.

I was instructed to upgrade the firmware on the router, which you can do by logging into the device, going to the advanced tab,and following hte instruction.

This helped some.

But lately the problem is back.

How can I make settings to support DHCP IP assignments and also recognize my manual IP's assigned to the LAN connected devices?

The easiest way I can think of is to shrink the DHCP address pool.

To do that, at least on the model of Actiontec router I have, click on "Network (Home/Office)" the go to the "IP Address Distribution" section of the screen. "DHCP Server" should already be selected, and under that, you'll find "Start IP addresses" and "End IP addresses." Usually, the start will be and the end will be What I usually do is change the start address to That leaves over 50 addresses for normal wireless connections, and I'll general assign IP addresses from the rest of the range as follows: to routers, APs, etc. to printers to for other static devices. (I often find that Blu-Ray players, cable boxes, etc. behave better if they have a static address.)

But really, on home network, I doubt you'll have more than 15 devices that need static addresses, so you could set the DHCP start address as low as if you wanted to.

Actiontec GT704WGB from Verizon is working through Earthlink yet Verizon still thinks it is providing service and want to set up my "account"

Sounds like you have Verizon software on your computer. The router has nothing to do with that. Go into control panel > add remove programs and remove the Verizon software.

I suspect that Verizon is degrading service to forcr users to mig

Anything is possible but it would take a lot of work to jam wireless signals. As a communications company, Verizon, if caught would be in hot water with the FCC. I have an idea. Are you able to change channels on your wireless and try it. Also, is there anyway you could try a different wireless router? If FIOS is coming in, there may be maintenance changes in the infrastructure that effect your internet performance.

Cannot Network printers on FIOS system

If both computers are connected to the router. Try turning off the firewall on both computers first. normally its firewalls blocking file and printer sharing that block the connection.

Cisco vpn will not work with verizon service now after we got a new modem through verizon

Verizon Home DSL service uses a special filter that prevents ALL incomming connection including web, email and VPN hosting from a home connection. Business internet does not limit this, and I don't believe FIOS blocks it. If you have verizon home, there's nothing you can do. If you're just trying to connect to a home machine, you can try something like gotomypc, or a free alternative like or

If you don't have verizon home dsl, comment back with what service you do have, and we can try some other things.

Dropping wireless connection

The problem may not be with your router. I had a situation a year ago with the modem dropping the signal everyday. I spent hours on the phone with verizon tech support to no avail. They sent someone out to my home and he put a filter on the main line coming into the house which didn't resolve the issue. Then verizon insisted the modem was bad so they sent me an actiontec. Turns out that the problem had nothing to do with me. They try to squeeze as much bandwith at their switching stations as they can. They switched me over to another hub and viola no more problem.
