Drive not being recognized, making weird noises?

Okay, this hard drive worked perfectly fine before. But now it's not being recognized on the computer and it keeps on making these loud clicking noises...why? Oh by the way, whenever i click on a program saved on that drive, it says :"...Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again." Help?

Re: Drive not being recognized, making weird noises?

I really hope I'm dead wrong on this one. But from the little bit you've described so far, my first guess would be that the loud clicking noise you're hearing is what is known as the 'click of death'.
From Wikipedia: "Click of death" is a term that became common in the late 1990s referring to the clicking sound in disk storage systems that signals the device has failed, often catastrophically." In other words, get out your original purchase receipt and/or warranty (if still valid) and get it replaced or your money back.

My seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive makes a weird noise and I cannot access it from My Computer

Bad news.
If a hard drive makes a clicking noise, it's most likely lost forever.

I have been able to rescue files from a dying hard drive which refused to cooperate with Windows (however it didn't make weird noises). I just plugged it into an Ubuntu computer and managed to copy a portion of the files with a command line tool called rsync. About one third of the files were corrupted but the rest of them were ok. The copying took several hours to complete. The drive had a significant pile of bad sectors, so that's why...

Another (rather difficult) rescue tool would have been ddrescue. Using it would probably take an entire day or so. As long as the hard drive communicates with a linux computer in any way, tools like rsync or ddrescue could be used.

However, if a hard drive has reached a point where it makes some extra noises, it's probably way beyond any point of reasonable recovery. Assuming it does not communicate with any computer, be it windows or gnu/linux, fixing your drive could require some extra knowledge, hardware or money.

There are companies who are willing to fix that hard drive for an outrageous sum. Before even considering commercial data rescue options, you need to as yourself: "Is my data really worth that much?" If you are working on an important project and years of work is on that drive and there are no backups anywhere, letting a company take care of it could be your cup of tea after all.

My wd15eads is not recognized but my computer and i have pictures that i need on it.

Is the drive clicking or making any weird noises? If this is the case, you won't be able to do anything with it unfortunately. It will need to go to a professional data recovery company.

My drive has been working perfectly with my PC for a couple of years, it's about 75% full. Last night I attached it to a different laptop and it worked fine there. When I reconnected to the original PC...

Try to scan your Had Drive with updated anti virus it may attacked by a virus. Connect it again where the hard drive is working fine. I have some clarification if you disconnect it properly in the computer where you have the time you use it. Because if you disconnect it in your PC without proper procedure it may possible cause of corrupting you files inside you hard drive or internal damage to your hard drive.

My computer is not recognizing the drive when I plug it in.

Hi did you try in other computer if yes and still didnt work do you listen any noise on the hard drive .
another thing to do to be sure that the usb ports are working fine in your computer its not been disabled bu bios or an antivirus please plug a flash drive or other hard drive in the computer and see if it gets recognized if yes then your system dosent have any issue .and check the hard drive if it dosent get recognized in the other computer also then may be the partitiontable is corrupt or your iomega hard drive case has problem.
To remove data from your hard drive in the worse case u need to remove the hard drive and plug it to the system directly and check

I have a maxtor 3200 that was working & today is not being recognized by my PC. Everytime I unplug the USB cord either from the hard drive or from the computer, the hard drive makes a weird noise, like...

how old is it?? you really should have the ex-HDD ejected using the "remove usb device" radio button located in the taskbar by the clock. you can corrupt the drive by not removing it correctly. if the HDD makes loud grinding noises.., then it is a head crash which is attached to the armature in the drive.and its no good. but..i could be wrong..i would need to see it firsthand to confirm that it is dead. take it to your local computer shop to have them look at it.
let us know whats going on with it....i hope i have been of assistance

Weird noises, not recognized by laptop

This is a common problem with hard drives. Most hard drives (whether external or internal) that produces a "weird clicking noises" indicates a mechanical problem. Often this is the head arm trying to move from its position but failing to do so. What you are hearing as "weird clicking noises" are when it slaps back to its park position or when trying to move into correct position.

Should this be the case, am afraid that the HD is a goner. The normal course of action is to replace. If the data inside are mission critical, your only course of action is to avail of those data recovery by firm specializing in such but they are rather expensive.

Trying to use "data recovery software" might prove to be futile since as earlier stated, the problem is mechanical in nature.

You can of course still give it a try.

Should you feel adventurous, would be willing to experiment and gamble, pls post back as I may have not a permanent solution but a "down & dirty" trick of making it run long enough hopefully to get some of your data back. Again, this is a "hit or miss" and should only be considered if all else fails and you really want to get your files back.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
