Orange light in the lower part of freezer

I was digging out the bottom of the freezer drawer of my side-by-side when I heard a sizzling sound when water drops down into the drain area of the freezer, and a weird orange light coming from the back of the freezer. Everything appears to be working fine, smells fine, sounds fine. Drain appears not to be clogged. But why the light? why the sizzling sound?

Re: orange light in the lower part of freezer

Pants, don't worry about this, your refer was going into defrost. When this happens, the defrost heater turns on to melt the ice off the evaporator in the freezer comp. Last's about 20 minutes and sometimes you can see the glow and hear the ice hitting the heater...Catriver.

Is there a way to remove the drawer in the bottom freezer?

Pull the drawer all the way out until it stops. Then lift the front of the freezer drawer (a couple of inches), and pull out further (4-6"). The front will then lower to the floor. Lift the back of the drawer upward and slid the entire drawer forward. You may want to protect your floor. I did the above with the freezer drawer full and scratched my floor a little...

We have a TFX25JR side-by-side with ice maker and water dispenser; had water leaking on floor on freezer side of bottom left corner. Comes under tray, cleaned the coils and seemed to work, but 2 weeks...

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

Fridge not staying cold

Inside the fresh food compartment there is a defrost timer hidden behind the temp control panel. Sometimes there is a plastic plug over the hole that you need to put a flathead screwdriver in and slowly turn it clockwise. When compressor stops I want you to wait about 25 minutes to see if the refrigerator comes back on by itself without help. If it does I need you to listen inside the freezer compartment for sa sound of crackling or sizzling noise indicating defrost is taking place. Let me know, Sea Breeze

Red glow (from defrost heater?) at bottom of rear panel in freezer

This is from the GE Appliance "Knowledge Database" Web site:

Refrigerator - Explanation Of Red Glow

In a no frost refrigerator, the defrost timer activates defrost heaters in the evaporator section (rear of freezer) which heat up and melt the frost off the evaporator coils. This process lasts for approximately 25-45 minutes and usually happens up to twice a day.

During this time, there will be no running sounds, no fan noise, and you may hear water dripping or sizzling as it hits the heaters. On side by side models, you may even be able to see an orange glow at the bottom of the freezer.

This is normal.

Falling water hits something hot in freezer and causes sizzle sound

the sizzling noise is water hitting the defrost elememt and this is normal - shows the defrost system is working. if water comes on the floor of the freezer, this may be the drain for the defrost water is blocked. remove the freexer back panel and the drain is in the tray where the defrost water is caught. if it is blocked - usually with ice - clear it with hot water and make sure the water drains freely. takes some patience and maybe several attempts
