USB ports won't work

I have an acer aspire 5720 laptop. My USB ports don't work when I plug in certain USB devices, some devices work, but others don't, I know it is not the device that is the problem, as I can use them fine on other computers, and when I check if the device is working properly it says it is, I just can't access any of the files on it, I don't understand what the problem is, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like some of the ports on the motherboard are starting to go bad.

You can try doing a system restore back to a date when they were working all properly.

If not you might want to save the important information off of the hard drive and wipe it out and reinstall the OS and the drivers. If on a fresh install the usb ports are still not working properly then you know the motherboard is faulty.

SOURCE: how to downgrade acer aspire 5720 vista to xp

Rashidbb, I would find the drivers first, (this may be difficult), and have them ready to install before downgrading to XP. This way you wont have to look around for drivers on a machine that doesnt function 100%

SOURCE: Acer Aspire 5720-6438 recovery cd/driver cd

if you need drivers, you can download it from www.acerpanam.com.
for recovery cd, i don't think acer have it online, you need to order it from them.

FYI, if you haven't delete the partition in your hdd, you can use alt+f10 to re-install your Operating system and after that, you can create your own recovery cd.

My Acer laptop ASPIRE 5738 does not recognise USB Mouse, previously it is working fine. But if I attach other USB device it is working. It is only problem with USB mouse.

Do you have another USB mouse around that you can test with? It sounds like the USB port on your laptop is fine but the mouse is the issue.
If you can find a spare around and test or alternatively you could try to bring the laptop to a friends house and borrow their USB mouse temporarily.
My guess is that the other mouse will work fine. How many USB ports does this computer have? You can also try changing which port you plug it in to.

I cannot connect my external hard drive to my Acer Aspire laptop. I can connect it straight away to my mac and Dell but not this. Do I need to do anything with the USB ports?

Make sure you plug it straight into the USB port on the laptop, not though a USB hub (just in case).
Also make sure you use an external power supply for the hard disk if provided, laptops often have more power limitations on their USB ports.
Other than that, you can check that your USB ports are configured for version 2.0 and not 1.1. in the Laptop bios (F2 or Del key during boot).

If all that does not help, maybe you'll find a solution here: http://www.devicedriverfinder.com/blog/device-errors/external-hard-drive-troubleshooting

My magic jack is not being read by my acer notebook

when you plug it in does anything come up? If not then go ahead and try different usb ports and see if its read by any of them. If none of your USB ports read the magic jack and you know the USB ports work cause you can hook other devices to them then that means the magic jack is bad and would need to be replaced.

If none of your usb ports are reading any devices then that means the motherboard is bad at that point.

Acer notebook usb not recognized

Sounds like a hardware issue. I would guess that there is a bad connection between the usb's and the motherboard. If you are comfortable dismanteling the laptop and re-soldering the usb's than give that a try, but I would recomend you give it to a pro.

Bluetooth prolem on acer aspire 5720

welcome to FIXYA

Set up a Bluetooth enabled deviceTo set up a Bluetooth enabled device, you need to do three things:
  1. Add a Bluetooth adapter to your computer.
This is usually done by plugging the adapter into a USB port. (If a Bluetooth adapter is already built in or attached to your computer, ignore this step.)
  2. Set up the device so that your computer can find it.
    To do this, you must:
    • Turn the device on.
    • Make it discoverable.
To learn how to make a device discoverable, check the information that came with your device or go to the manufacturer’s website.
  3. Install the device.
To install most devices, such as a mobile phone, keyboard, mouse, or personal digital assistant (PDA), you can use Bluetooth Devices in Control Panel. If you have Bluetooth wireless technology installed on your computer, follow these steps:
To install a Bluetooth enabled device
    1. Click the Start button getcontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=signed1, click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Bluetooth Devices.
Click Add, and then follow the instructions.

i hope this helps you out have a good day :)

Usb port on Acer aspire 5050

Be safe rather than sorry, get yourself a Powered USB Hub.

One of the problems with USB is that a device is only allowed to draw up to 500mA of power (100mA on first connection). So, if you buy a non-powered hub, it will only support one high-power (500mA) peripheral, and the other ports on that hub may be useless. Plug a mixture of devices into a non-powered hub and some might work while others might not. Since people expect to be able to plug any USB device into any USB port, I think this is really bad. Using a powered USB hub generally eliminates the problem.
