"help" is displayed in body data panel. I removed and reinserted battery but no help. I just bought the camera used and I am a Novice. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
On the Minoltas that usually means that the film advance motor has died or one of the plastic gears has broken teeth. In any case, it needs repair. Consider getting it repaired or go to Ebay and get another Maxxum for about the same price.

This error indicates a memory problem.
The camera can't read or write data to the memory card. Try turning off and on the camera again, or take out and reinsert the memory card several times. Also remove and reinsert the battery.
It also can mean the memory card is not formatted, or there is a format error for an other reason. Format the internal memory or the memory card.
It also could mean the memory card is damaged and can't be used any more. Then you have to place a new memory card.
I hope something will help.
This is also in you user manual.
Caution: The resets described in these troubleshooting steps will cause a loss of applications, programs and data. If at all possible please create a backup using TI Connect first.

This was suggest by TWC42 on Amazon. I tried it and it worked. Had the same issue with mine. Here's a fix that might work. Set batteries aside. Remove the 6 screws from the back with a small phillips. Lift off the back. Remove the 5 smaller screws holding the display in place. Insert the three batteries. If the display now shows a number without flickering, do not remove batteries. Carefully replace display, reinsert five screws. Place back on, reinsert 6 screws. Turn over, see if off/on works. Mine did!

If an aperture of "00" is displayed on the camera's LCD panel, perform the following steps in order. Check after each step to see if the problem remains, and proceed to the next step if it does. (In some cases, you may see "Err 01" displayed on the LCD panel.)
1. Check if the lens is correctly mounted on the camera.
If no lens is attached to the camera, "00" will be displayed for the aperture value.
2. Clean the lens contacts.
Turn the camera's power switch to OFF, and then detach the lens from the camera to clean the contacts.
Use a blower to blow away dust on the lens.
Do not touch both the camera's or lens' electrical contacts with your fingers while cleaning the lens.
Turn the power switch to ON again and check the aperture value displayed on the LCD panel.
Refer to the Instruction Manual provided with your camera for instructions for detaching or mounting the lens.
Also, prevent any foreign materials or dust from getting into the camera through the lens mount, and be sure not to damage the contacts.
3. Remove the battery pack.
Turn the camera's power switch to OFF and remove the battery pack. Then reinsert the battery pack, and then turn the power switch to ON again.
