Re: Orange Engine light is on - Nissan pathfinder 1996
Take it to an AutoZone or O'Reilly's and have the codes read. WRITE THEM DOWN, and report them back here. We can then help you more. Yes, in most all cases, you can drive the vehicle.

If the check engine light(orange) when dash lights up then it is a mechanical problem. If the orange check engine doesn't light up then the security system is in alarm mode. Must have a tool to synchronize engine computer with BeCM. Very common problem
With all the computers and electronics, programmed or designed for the factory engine that is in it, be careful to get the Nissan designated engine type or descriptor exact same as yours. Auto salvagers have an interchange data base- they should be able to tell you where else to look. Probably a narrow field, I doubt anything before '96 would work, that was when new emission regulations went into place. I recall one swapper saying get the same exact engine, and same year or you'll be doing modifications work.
Does it happen when idling is gear? (I.e. at a red light, then when you try to accelerate it stalls?) Have you tried keeping your foot slightly on the gas pedal?
If so, this could be a vacuum seal problem. Get a Vacuum Gauge, then use this site to help determine what the exact culprit is:
Your car is most likely obd2 compliant (in the US everycar built after 1996 is) this means your check engine light could be on for a whole list of reasons, You will need an obd2 scanner to plug into the diagnostics connector to read the codes. Many times car parts places will let you use theres, hoping to sell you parts when you know what needs to be fixed. If the use of free one is not available you can probably buy one off of ebay for not too much. Use the code scanner, write down the codes and google them and/or buy a haynes manual that will explain how to do all these things.
