Wired Router problem

I have a wired router from Wal-Mart (probably first problem) :) and I'm trying to have my Playstation 3 and my PC online at the same time, but to get one of them working I have to push the "RESET" button on my cable modem and THEN power the PC or PS3 on. My problem is the ROUTER dosen't do its job, how can I avoid having to reset my modem everytime I want to get online?

Re: Wired Router problem

Are you working with a router or a hub...there's a big difference in how they work. The heading above your post says LinkSys NH1005 Networking hub, but your post refers to a Router.(?) Can you provide the exact brand and model number from the device?

A router can support several devices and allow them to share a single IP address on the Internet. Router setup is usually automatic, but there are several settings that can be adjusted manually if it doesn't work right. If this is a hub, the ability to assign addresses to more than one device at a time will have to be set up by your ISP on the cable modem.

Your description of the problem sounds like you may be working with a hub, and the cable modem isn't supporting connection of more than one device at a time to the Internet. If that is the case, you will need to contact your cable provider to see if they can support more than one network device using a hub. If not, you will need to upgrade to a router.

Linksys sd208 reset

The reset button is usually at the back of the router. If you are unable to locate it you can reset it using a web based set-up page. Make sure you connect your router to a PC using wired connection and perform the following steps:
Step 1:
Launch a web browser like Internet Explorer.
Step 2:
In the Address bar, enter "" as the router's default IP address then press [Enter]. If this doesn't work or if the IP address of your router has been changed, enter it instead.
Step 3:
Enter "admin" in the Password field then leave the User name blank. If you have set up a User name and Password for your Linksys router before, enter your personalized credentials instead.
QUICK TIP: For Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers, you can enter "http://myrouter.local" on the Address bar to access its web-based setup page.
The router's web-based setup page should now appear from here you can reset the router.

No internet when adding switch between modem and router

The router controls and assigns IPs. Configuration goes from ISP modem to router to switch.

I just got optimum online and I wanted to use my FriendlyNet FH105T5 hub to network the internet to my Mac (OS 10.4.11), my Pc( Windows 7), and my xbox- latest software), at best I've only been able to get...

Assuming that this internet service has 1 ip address that is being payed for?
Then only one device can be connected at any one time for use of the internet.
A router would be the FIX for this issue. Your HUB can still be used, but only
if it's connected to a port on the Router. Both wired and wireless routers commonly
have 4 ports like your HUB..

Only one computer can acces the internet in my hub , I have a Linksys NH1005 hub , I'm using cable dsl , but only one computer can acces the internet , it does not matter wich port

If you want to use more than one computers you will need to replace that hub with router. Best is to get wireless router because in most routers you have places for wired connections and also wireless connection.

Reason why you can't use more than one computer is simple because most ISP are allowing only one computer to be connected from DSL modem.

I have a cable modem. from the cable modem I go to a 5 port hub

That is because most cabel internet providers only gives you one public IP. Please go to a Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Walmart, or Targer, and ask for a LinkSys Router. The router will do NAT (Network Address Translation) that will allow more than one PC share the single public IP. This will solve your problem and will cost an estimated $30.00. The router is simple to hook up, just plug the cabel from your modem into the Internet/WAN port on the router. And the two computers into any of the other ports. Be sure to unplug both cable modem and router then plug up the cable modem first, once the ready light is on, plug up the router.

Using laptop and pc on this router

You SHOULD NOT post your personal details here...

The dx esw5 is not a router, it is a switch so it cannot assign an IP to the second PC.

dx esw manual HERE

Which ever PC is turned on first will get an IP assigned by the modem and the other will not.

My guess is that the service provider for your internet only allows 1 IP to be assigned by the modem.

What model is the modem

I think you need a router to share the internet between 2 PC's

Depending on router brand you may be able to log in and check that wired portion is enabled...look carefully at documentation for instructions. I had a similar problem with a D-Link Router and found the info for enabling wired connection at their website. Another problem I had one time was ( believe it or not ) one of my cats has a **** for chewing on wires !!! It was an easy fix after figuring out the problem. Cat is now at SPCA ( just kidding )
