There are two IC's in this set that need to be replaced. If you can solder and unsolder on printed circuit boards, this repair should not be that difficult to do. If you have no experience with soldering, you should seek the help of a professional. YES, the IC's for the convergence is available but to have a pro do this job will cost you about 275 to 400 bucks. Good luck with this repair.

Take off the back of this TV set. Look for a large metal flange type with two black looking 2 inch by 3 inch devices mounted on it. These devices will start with the letters of STK. Replace them both if you understand and know how to solder and unsolder on solid state printed circuit boards.

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Getting red, blue and green halos around images

I had a similar problem with red halos around images on my Hitachi rear projection TV. The problem was that the red convergence chip burned out. I replaced that and that fixed the problem. I found several forum posts on similar symptoms and fixes for Sony rear projection TVs by searching for "Sony rear projection convergence problem." Likely you've already tried the auto-convergence function for your set, if it has that.

Double image/ out of focus with green and blue seperation

Your tv is crt-based and is out of convergence. In other words, the settings for keeping the Red, Green and Blue images aligned have drifted and must be reset. This is common with CRT projectors and CRT rear projection tvs.

Refer to your owners manual for instructions on re-aligning it.

Samsung HCM5525W TV red blue outlines on images

The Samsung has bad convergence IC's most likly. This should be repair ONLY by a trained technician as a TV set is not a place to experiment or tinker with because of the extremly high voltage inside. This repair should cost you in the range of 250 to 400 bucks . Good Luck
