93wrangler6cyl,auto when cold backfires, sputters until warms up
93 wrangler 6cyl, auto when cold backfires, sputters, can barely keep running. Once temp reaches about 180 it runs fine. It happened overnight, drove it all day one day the next morning got up (very cold outside)and it's backfiring, has no power, can't rev/give it gas to keep it running because it just starts backfiring and sputtering. Did complete tune up on it (wires/plugs, dist.cap, rotor, coil), replaced the crank shaft counter sensor (not sure that is the correct name), put gas treatment in thinking it was bad gas but if that's the case I would think it wouldn't straighten out when it warms up. Any suggestions of what else to do or what the problem may be?????
Won't put this in as a definite "fix" yet, but I'd check the output on your intake manifold air temp sensor and perhaps also the coolant temp sensor. If one is out of range it could possibly do that.Won't put this in as a definite "fix" yet, but I'd check the output on your intake manifold air temp sensor and perhaps also the coolant temp sensor. bad need of a tuneup? like new spark plugs, ?
172 , is 02 rich/ lean warning. this one is low oxy for rich.
this code can just be a victim. for sure , with misfire.
means 02 sensor stuck at rich,
what is water temp in engine coolant, at failure? less than 150F?
could be lots of things.
leaking injectors, bad fuel.
injector sticking> causing misfire.
id use a scan tool and watch all sensor when it fails.
too high fuel pressure.
misfires cold, but only luke warm cold starts not fully cold.
just one DTC, no P0300 or 30x misfire codes, not even P0300 pendings?
If you have a Auto Zone by you take it their and have them do a trouble code check. Its free to do it. It could be a O2 sensor or the Mass Air Flow Sensor. They will tell you for sure when they run the check on it.
It will be either the pick-up coil inside of the distributor is malfunctioning, the Dura-Spark Control Unit is faulty, or the wiring to and around the Dura-Spark Control Unit and running out to the engine is faulty. (I always find these wires on those year Ford trucks to be in very poor condition with a lot of missing wire insulation allowing the bare metal wires to touch each other or to short out on the body ground) The wires should be inspected very carefully and also be certain that you inspect inside of the wire looms for any damaged wires.
You might be able to remove the Dura-Spark Control Unit and have it tested for free at most auto part stores.
does it make any difference if the engine is cold or warm ? if when its warm and it starts ok your spider part is not working properly or not plugged in right check it again .. check it by using starting fluid if it starts ok its the spider part bad .. did you replace it with new ? holler if you need more Jerry
Won't put this in as a definite "fix" yet, but I'd check the output on your intake manifold air temp sensor and perhaps also the coolant temp sensor. If one is out of range it could possibly do that.
