How do you know if the bulb needs to be replaced on a Samsung 42" DLP TV?
It's about 3000 to 5000 hrs. on the bulb this translates to about 3 to 5 yrs. of normal use. it can, however, be greatly reduced by the number of on/off conditions. lamps need to cool down that is why the fans run longer after shut down.
obviously if the TV doesn't turn on that can be lamp. weak or dim picture is another sign.

lamp. dim picture is a lamp issue. in all the sets I've seen it's the lamp. some might tell you that the balast would cause this but it's not true. balast has to provide consistant power to keep the lamp lit. the lamp has presurized gas that becomes weak like that of flourescent do over time. on the side of your set is the lamp code use that code to order a new lamp. they are very easy to replace or have a tech do it for you. you can order it at samsung or other lamp distributors. stay away from LTI lamps.
