Hey, now, sometimes your burning software just gets corrupted. If there are no error checks in device manager, you need to try to download the burning software that came with your computer. If it came with the computer, you will need to go to HP for it, not the software burning site, as the programs are slightly different. Seems odd, but the CD/DVD drives DO NOT NEED DRIVERS. In order to work, they DO need a good functional burning program (not microsoft's). You can find out which burning program came with your computer with an excellent freeware program called Belarc Advisor--it will list all hardware and software, versions, codes, etc. Then go to HP and redownload it--they may have an upgrade. Bet that will solve it.

Pls uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the cd/dvd drive and check in device manager if the driver for the cd/dvd drive has any red X mark or an exclamation mark.

If this doesnt work, then delete the filter from the registry.

Click Start , click RUN and then type "regedit " into the open box in the Run window.
The registry editor window appears.
Select Computer in the main window.
Click File , Export , type a filename that is easy for you to remember, and click Save .
A copy of the registry has saved for back-up purposes to the Documents folder. If problems occur after using these steps, browse to the file and double-click it to restore the registry.
Click the plus sign (+ ) next to the following items in the list: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 . Make sure you have selected this exact key name.
Select the LowerFilters value and press the Delete key. Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes .
If an UpperFilters value is also listed, select UpperFilters in the right window and press the Delete key.
Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes .
Delete all other UpperFilter and LowerFilter values within the 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 key if they exist.

If this doesnt work, then you ll have to reinstall XP

You Dont specify the O/S but it could be the Autoplay option is turned off.. Try browsing to the Drive via My Computer and double clicking on the CD/Dvd Rom. It should have the name of the DVD or CD as its name. If it doesnt, then there may be a read problem with the drive, If you can manually start the move or drive via the above method, the you need to browse to My Computer, Right click on the DVD drive and you will see an Autoplay Tab at the top. There is a Reset Defaults button if you dont fancy experimenting with the settings, All this is assuming you have some software to play DVDs in the 1st place. Cheers. Pete

PC will not boot up. Almost did once but screen went black. Reboot doesn't help. No green light on monitor and PC makes a long slow beep over and over. I have recovery discs but when put it nothing...

Based on your description of your problem, my educated guess is that you have a problem with the system board or motherboard. Checking Compaq support site, it says that beeps are generally heard when a hardware device is not connected properly or has failed.

First thing to try is disconnect the keybaord and mouse and try to start the computer again. What we are trying to do is find out which hardware device might be involved. So start with the keyboard an mouse. If the computer still does not start, remove any periferal drives, like floppy or cd drives.

There are several beep codes, below are a few examples listed:

Beep codes common to HP and Compaq Desktop PCs The following beep codes are common to many HP and Compaq desktop computers. Use these codes first before referring to the other code lists. NOTE: Not all codes are shown. Beeps Description 1 short beep and 1 long beep Memory problem 2 short beeps and 1 long beep (repeats 5 times) Unable to initialize video or video card required but not installed 3 short beeps and 1 long beep CPU configuration error or CPU type is not compatible The following beep codes are common to many HP and Compaq desktop computers that can occur while restoring, flashing or updating the BIOS : Beeps Description 1 short beep Legacy floppy drive or CD/DVD drive not detected 2 short beeps Floppy diskette or compact disc not detected 3 short beeps Unable to start flashing (such as when missing a utility or BIOS image) 4 short beeps Flashing failed (checksum error, corrupted image, etc.) 5 short beeps BIOS recovery successful Try working on this solution and see if you can get the computer to start. Below is a link to a troubleshooting page from Compaq for your computer. This can be a good reference as well.

I hope that this information was helpful.

My acer aspire 5100 has stopped detecting cd / dvd drive. When i insert a CD the Orange light blinks instead of Green, it appears as if the drive is reading CD but nothing happens, also the CD Drive is not...

Try the following:
  • Use a CD Cleaner (Or try with a soft cloth with a spirit)
  • Worse case scenario, you will need to take it to repair shop to change leaser head.

Dvd-cd rw drive

This means that your CD-rom drive does not read the CD, it could be that the CD is a different format (DVD, for example) or the lens is dirty or Your drive is faulty. see if your drive is compact or dvd and try the right formats. Try clean your CD-drive lens. If all this does not fix the problem, your drive is faulty. And needs repair.
