Hi gillian_duda you do not need a disc but you do need a usb cable to update your tomtom...if you dont have one of these cables you can get them off ebay for under five dollars....see picture below
you can download the tomtom home program HERE just pick the operating system you are using on your computer. once you have downloaded the tomtom home application just follow the on screen directions.
you can download a copy of your manual HERE just scroll down the list till you find your XL, i would of given a direct link, but there are a few different XL models
its not suppose to have any adhesive on it. not sure with one (mount ) tomtom gave you with your unit (they have a few differant ones) but if its the one that looks like the one pictured below, you just press it on the windshield(make sure its good and clean)
that is absolutely the worst mount them make, normally they wont stay on long and your gps will fall off and hit the floor and most likely damage it.
you should of gotten a black plastic disk to use to put under the mount for good adhesion .
Step 1: Make sure the dash is clean and dry.
Step 2: Take the dash mounting DISC that came with the unit and remove the cover sheet (yellowish in color). This should expose the adhesive.
Step 3: Place the adhesive side of the disc on the area of the dash where you want your unit mounted. Be aware that the disc will not remove easily after being placed.
Step 4: Press and hold the disc in place and put pressure on it to squeeze out any air pockets.
Step 5: Once the disc is in place, ensure that the smooth surface of the disc is clean and dry, and free of grease.
Step 6: Press the suction cup on the back of the TomTom windshield mount onto the smooth part of the disc, and rotate the locking ring clockwise until it won't turn any further. The locking ring is used to form an air-tight seal between the suction cup and the surface it is mounted to.
To remove the suction cup from the dashboard disc, simply rotate the locking ring counter clockwise and remove the unit from the disc. The disc remains permanently attached to the dash.
plug the unit into your usb cable on your computer and let it charge for at least 2 hours, then try again.
if
that fails, try the reset, the reset is on the bottom of your Xl using a papre clip insert it in the little pin hole but
make sure remove the sd card and you have let it charge for at least 2
hours before trying to start or resetting the unit.
