MyBook is not working - My computer does not find it!

I have a MyBook (320Gb) and so far it worked great. I have uploaded many files on it. Now, when I plug it in my computer, it does not show. I have tried with another computer -same problem. I cannot access it. Do you know what is happening? Thanks

Re: MyBook is not working - My computer does not find it!

Step one is to turn off the machine, connect the drive, turn the machine on and then watch (you may have to hit pause if it's a fast machine) to see if it is recognized by bios when you boot.
Step two, if it's recognized, is to check under Device Manager and see if the driver is there (and whether there or not reinstall it).

What's probably happening is a hiccup (if lucky and more than likely you are). A hiccup is simply one bit somewhere in the millions of bits on your machine (also code "code") that went awry.

Step three...assuming it's not there is to use add/remove hardware and do a search....follow instructions from there.

Step four...if your careful efforts in step three give you zip it's possible the drive is bad or the fat (file allocation table...and yes NTFS formatted drives have one also) is corrupted.

This can be fixed by restoring the fat....see Mircosoft knowledgebase articles on this depending on what OS you are running.

If that does not work....but you can see the drive....format is your last option assuming you first download the disk diagnostics from the manufacturer and run that program to verify the disk is good.

I can think of more but the above is most probable and, believe it or not, in your time interest. Lastly, if you have important stuff on that drive download Recuva (free) at cnet downloads and try to recover what is still it to some other media or to a folder on your primary drive.

Trust this will keep you busy if nothing else...odds are 70/30 the drive may be bad. Tango....

I have the same problem with my WD 500 gb. Ii has been working fine everyday, and suddenly it lights, and I can see it searching, but the files will not come up. I get a box on the screen asking me if I...

The disk-drive inside the casing is "dying".
The "table-of-contents" (listing all the files/folders on the drive) cannot be read.

Check the warranty-status of the unit -- if the warranty-period has not expired, then Western Digital will replace the MyBook, at no cost to you.

Wdc 320 gig MyBook external hd is not recognized anymore. I have attempted to access the files on several different computers (laptops). The HD is powered on (light is on). I do hear a clicking sound when...

If you hear a clicking sound then that might be the sound of a defective harddrive. You could try removing the harddrive from the case and installing it directly into the computer to see if it is working. If it does then it could be the hard drive case power supply is defective. But the clicking sounds like a defective drive. If it is still under warranty then you could get it repaired by western digital...if it is still under warranty then do not open the case or you could void it.

I bought a Western Digital 640GB external hard drive about 6 weeks ago and installed it just fine. Have been using it (only used about 50GB) for 6 weeks with no problems. Today a notice appeared from Memeo...

This trial software expiration shouldn't prevent the external drive from working. The drive should be visible in "My Computer", Windows Explorer etc. A quick way to determine if the drive does have a problem, is plug it into another system- if it works there, then you have some sort of problem on the first machine- likely a software bug- or maybe some virus has fouled things up.

Computer suddenly not recognizing relatively new WD MyBook 640GB

Just a shot in the dark, but ..., shut down your computer and unplug the drive. Turn the hard drive off, then back on. Plug it back into the computer and restart. If it doesn't pop up, restart your computer this time with it plugged in.
Is there any noise coming from the drive? Is the green light on the front?
The same thing happened to me and the same drive, but 500gb. I did the above and it fired right back up again. You may have to delete the trial version from the drive if it on there, or from your computer if you had originally installed it.

Mybook of 500GB has a strange noise in disk

If it's making a clicking, rattling, or "leaking" (like the sound of air whistling out of a balloon) then the drive may be damaged and it's time to contact Western Digital support.

My Western Digital 320GB MyBook... Problem

If all you want to do is transfer data that you have backed up on your main computer then all you need to do is plug the drive into another computer, click on 'my computer' and click on the mybook drive to explore the data on it. To transfer a certain file just copy it and paste it onto the drive of the new computer.

If you are talking about backing up data from a second PC, you will need to install the WD software on that particular PC, and use the advanced backup menu. Just remember that if you back up a second computer, you need to create a folder for that data to be stored in, otherwise it is possible that it would overwrite the data from your first PC

in otherwords to back up several PCs the root of the WD drive should have folders in it labeled - 'PC 1', 'PC 2', etc

Hope this helps
