Re: protection light on

The amp probably has blown output transistors and is in need of repair.

Call some of the better car audio shops in your area and ask them who they use for repairs. If several use the same shop, it's a good indicator that they do good work.

Is something wrong with my amp if the protect light stays on or is it the wiring?

It could be the wiring. Sony amps will go into protection if the ohm is to low. They usually like to see 4 ohm or higher. Unplug your speaker wires and see if it still stays in protection. If it does could be an internal thing in the amp. If it isn't rewire subs in series not parallel.

Xplod XM-DS1600P5 red light

For some reason it has gone into protection mode to limit further damage to the amplifier. Remove the subwoofer wires and power on to eliminate shorted voicecoil. After checking all wires for continuity to ground, a service tech will be required.

Protection Light coming on with loud volume and power

It's most likely that the over-current protection is tripping at high power. At lower voltage, the amplifier can't produce as much output power and therefore can't produce enough current to trip the protection circuit.

You need to check your speakers to make sure that they are not shorted. With an ohm meter, the resistance across the voice coil shouldn't read any less than ~90% of the rated impedance.

If the speakers and the wiring are OK, the amp may have an internal fault causing the amp to go into protection.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

It's likely that there are shorted output transistors in at least one channel. If you want to repair it yourself, you'd have to determine which transistors are defective and replace them. The following page will help guide you through the basic troubleshooting.

Protection light on

The most common reason for an amplifier to go into protect is shorted output transistors. Class D amps are generally a bit more difficult to repair (especially those that use surface mount components). I'd recommend you take it to a local repair shop to have it repaired. If you want to try to repair it yourself, it will be time consuming but I'll try to help you through it.
