I've tried the ol' pushing the MODE/ON/OFF buttons for several seconds and taking out the batteries while the SB 600 is on... is there any other way to reset this thing??

How I can reset factory set from Nikon Speedlight SB-600?

To reset your Nikon Speedlight SB-600 you need to press Mode + ON/OFF, both buttons simultaneously for approximately 2 seconds to reset all settings, including the custom settings (except the distance unit selected in m/ft) to their default values.
If this doesn't work for you, please comment and let me know, and I will be more than happy to assist you to further resolve your issue.

I have a sb-600 flash. It works fine but it has

Try doing a reset - press the "Mode" and "On/off" buttons together for a few seconds and you go back to factory settings. Sounds like you got into some funky mode, assuming everything else is working ok.

Underexposure with Nikon SB-600 flash

1 - Make sure you don't have your diffuser screen pulled down. This is easy to overlook and will produce that effect.
2 - Reset your flash - hold down the "Mode" and "On/off" button together for a few seconds. This gets you out of any funky mode you could have accidently put yourself in
3 - Put camera in fully auto mode. That clears any weird modes you could have gotten into there
4 - Clean the contacts on the flash and camera. I use a pencil eraser and wipe with alcohol and paper towel. Dirty contacts can cause flash misfire or cause full flash during the preflash mode, which gives you dim or dark photos or sporatic flash operation.

I changed the batteries and continued to take photos when i noticed that the screen was flashing on and off and then going to standby mode. tried resetting back to default but screen still flashes. flash...

Hi Bill,

You are not using this flash like a sub-machine gun, right?
Is your reachargeable batteries older than 15 months?

Try this:
Set to low power on flash, set flash to manual.
Remove flash from hotshoe.
Fire the flash by pushing the flash button for 3 mins, same problem(s)?

The flash is not in sync with my nikon d40 anymore. It fires first. Pictures come out dark. The camera itself takes great flash pictures

It sounds like you're trying to use the SB-600 off camera, as a slave flash. While the SB-600 does indeed have slave capability, the D40 does not have the ability to function as a commander. Thus, the SB-600 is being triggered by the D40's pre-flash.

As stated above, the D40 does not function in commander mode. You can mount an SB-800 or SB-900 flash unit, which will function as a commander as well as a flash. Or you can mount an SU-800 commander unit.

Alternatively, you can switch the D40 to manual flash mode so as to eliminiate the preflash. However, you will then have to calculate the proper exposure yourself.

Sb600 flash has no communication with d70 camera

Have you tried using the wireless mode? Even if there is a problem with the hot shoe interface, it might still work using the wireless mode. To do this you have to set both the camera and the flash. On the D70, under the menu with the icon that looks like a pencil, select Flash Mode|Commander Mode|TTL|OK. On the flash, hold down the Zoom and [-] buttons to get the CSM menu. When you see the zigzag arrow, push the Mode button to turn on the wireless mode. You may have to use the [+] or [-] buttons to cycle through the menu to find the zigzag arrow.

Now you should be able to use the flash detached from the camera. Just pop up the D70 flash, which will tell the SB-600 what to do via light pulses. There are other settings that may be required (channel and group settings must match between camera and flash) and be careful not to block the light sensor on the side of the SB-600. If the wireless system is still working, you may find you like it better than hot shoe operation.

Speedlight SB-600 Display flashing.

My SB 600 is doing the exact same thing. I used Nikon's online support service and this is the response I got: "I would try doing the 2 button reset on the flash and then see if that helps. Also disconnect any battery packs you may have connected especially if its a third party battery pack. If none of the above work then please service the speedlight" Sounds like they don't know what it is, either. I tried the reset to no avail. I'm not sure I want to send it in to have it fixed, since it does seem to be working. But you're right, it's annoying.
