Sounds like you just need a new battery... if the car starts when you're charging, the starter is most likely just using the power from the charger (or the charging battery). And if it continues to run once you've started it, then the alternator is fine.

It's possible that when you installed the new lamp socket that you created a short in the battery, or that the battery is just old and needs replacing... but replacing it is definitely where i would start.

I have a 2001 monster Carlo 3.4, was driving and car was running fine all the sudden started losing speed and went to pull off free way and it died. Won't start, Silence when I try to start it.

IF you try to start it and turn the key and get NOTHING. The most likely cause of everything is: The alternator died and quit charging the battery. The battery died while you were driving because there was no alternator charging it. When the battery died, all the ignition signals stopped.

99 grand am was driving home battery was about to die so i tried to make it home before it died

Can't say what the thud was..but it certainly sounds like your alternator is not charging your system.. When it isn't charging and the car is running off the battery the car will do some weird things as it loses its.battery power then just die....Auto zone should have found that and not just charge the battery..get yourself a small car charger at autozone $25 -40 or so and charge it again and have them make a full charging system check..good luck..

Sounds like your alterator has malfunctioned and is not charging the battery or providing electrical energy to the vehicle.

voltage regulator. If it is bad, despite a new battery and alternator, the battery will constantly discharge, rather than charge as it is meant to do, the longer you drive the car.

When driving the radio died then the car died wouldnt start again wont even turn over

It sounds like your alternator went bad. The alternator is responsible for keeping your battery charged and at full power. If it goes bad, your battery eventually drains and things start to shut down.
Get your alternator and battery tested, I'm sure you'll find the alternator has died.
