Question about GE Profile JGS968 Gas Kitchen Range

1 Answer

Door locked After I used the self-cleaning feature on my GE Profile oven, the door remained locked for a few days now. I tried turning the power off for the oven and turning the power on, but the door is still locked. My warranty for the oven expired already. What can I do to fix this?

There is something I should mention though. I tried to use the self-cleaning feature for the first time a few weeks ago. After I set the cleaning feature, there was some motorized clicking sound in which the door could not lock and the oven could not clean. It wasn't until last week, I decided to try it again and finally the door locked and the oven did the cleaning. But as of now, the light for "locked" is still blinking and the door is locked tight.

I did turn the power off several times for 30 mins throughout the week. After turning the power back on, I didn't hear anything. When I ran the self-cleaning, I let the oven clean for 4 hours. I waited 3 hrs after the cleaning was done to open the door...but it was locked. Last night, I pressed the self-cleaning button...but the self-cleaning would not activate, as it said "Clean" & "Door" on the display. I will turn the power off overnight, starting tonight. Do you think this will help?

  • SherryNg Jan 23, 2008 as of last night, I followed your advice. At first, I held the self-clean button for 10 seconds and nothing happened other than the usual display for me to hit the start button. After that, I shut the main power off for the range and left it like that overnight. I turned the power switch back on this morning and I heeard clicking noises. It stopped after 8-10 seconds. The door is still locked. Is there anything else I should do?

Hi sometimes they become stiff dont worry about breaking it they are pretty sturdy just try giving it a hard pull their should be no reason why its locked as their isnt an electronic lock keeping it closed maybe their is a air vacume and its just stuck with air so try giving it hard pull let me know what happens.
Maybe the seal has become stuck to the door but it still should open ok

Have you tried leaving it unplugged for couple of hours as the door lock should be on timer so it switchs off after self cleaning.
If this dont unlock the door for you then the problem will be with a bad connection on the door lock after speaking to friend who got same oven he told me the door locks during cleaning then few minutes after it unlocks.
Failing this have you tried pushing the door shut further to take the pressure of the lock and see if this will allow the lock to open maybe the door lock is to tight so try pushing it closed further let me know

switching it off for 30 min should reset the door lock and you should hear it click when you switch it back on by the mains.
switch it off at the mains

Did you wait 5 hours for the clean cycle to finish if not you need to re run the clean cycle this process takes 5 hours to complete

Its worth a try but failing this the problem i have seen regarding self cleaning ovens is if the wires going to the door lock or the selonoids are to close to the oven wall these have melted and caused problems with the door lock or not reaching the right temp.
The problem seems that when they are put together if they havent secured the wires properly far enough away from the oven wall then these wires have melted and cause a short or in your case not causing a short but not operating the door locking system.
When the oven self cleans the temp it reaches is that high that if not put together properly or if the wires have moved over time they melt or even the selonoids fail.
Try leaving it off over night if this is stinn no good then if you still have warranty get the repair people out under warranty.
If your warranty has run out then you either call someone out or tackle the job yourself.
If you decide to do it yourself you will need to remove most of the components form the back of the oven to be able to acess the lock to undo it and replace any parts as necessary.
Just give ot one last try over night but when you switch it back on at mains push against the oven door just incase this allows the lock to work let me know how you get on ok

also have you tried holding down the self clean button for 10 sec to see if that resets the clean mode this works on some ovens so its goto be worth a try

Hi form what your explaining it sounds like the locking mechanism itself is jammed and the switch locking it is trying to work but its not undoing the lock try turning it off again and when you switch back on push the door whilst this clicking noise is happening keep pushind hard against the door whilst the clicking noise is heard.
After doing this if it still fails to open then the only option you have ia to strip the oven down, this isnt something easy to do as you will have to remove most components just tto get to the door lock.
And putting everything back right in the right place is also a problem as you could short it out all together.
Have one last go if still no joy then im sorry to day but it will nees stripping untill you can get to the lock.
Pushing hard against the door might free the lock incase it is sticking you could also try pulling after whilst the clicking noise is heard but its more likely to open pushing as this takes the pressure off the lock let me know how you get on ok

Oven door locked

Many Kenmore ovens have a control lock that keeps the oven door locked even when the self-clean cycle has not been in use. This feature is meant to prevent children from opening the door or using the controls on the oven. To cancel the oven lockout, push and hold "Stop" for three seconds. Wait 15 seconds for the oven door to unlock automatically.

After verifying that the oven lockout feature has been released and waiting at least an hour after a self-clean cycle, if the oven door remains locked, try to reset the oven. Disconnect power to the range, and wait 30 seconds. Restore power and try again. If the door remains locked, disconnect the power and try to reset the circuit breaker or fuse. Contact Kenmore if the door remains locked after both attempts at a power reset at 800-827-6655.

I don't remember how to use the self cleaning feature

Remove everything from the inside of the oven, lock the door if your model has a latch handle that you move from left to right to lock the door, then set the oven selector switch to clean.
