I have locked the numbers on my laptop and don't know how. What is the shortcut to unlock. My lap top does not have a ten key number pad so the number are on the letters.

How to Access
Access function keys on a Compaq Presario by pressing any of the keys on the top row of the keyboard. Access the key's dual purpose by first pressing the "Fn" key located on the bottom row of keys.
Use function keys as shortcut keys by pressing them anytime while in the desired application. Remember, you must set them as shortcut keys first.
Note that some programs may already have certain function keys set as shortcuts.
Open menus and view the shortcut keys beside each menu item before setting your own shortcuts.


Dual Uses Each function key has a dual use. Press "Fn" plus the desired function key for the key's other use.
Below each function number is a small picture within a square or rectangle.
This dictates the dual use. "F1" opens help and support. "F2" serves as a printer shortcut.
Open your homepage by pressing "F3."
If you use dual monitors, switch between monitors by using "F4." "F5" puts your computer in stand-by mode.
Quickly lock your computer by pressing "F6." "F7" and "F8" adjust the screen's contrast.
Play and pause your music in Windows Media Player or other default media player by using "F9."
Press "F10" to stop playing media. Skip ahead or rewind media by using "F11" and "F12."

Other "Fn" Keys

In addition to function keys, the "Fn" key is also provides other keys with a dual use.
Any key with a small square on the key has a dual purpose such as the "scroll," "insert" and "delete" buttons.
Since laptop keyboards have no number pads, certain keys serve as the number pad by pressing the "Fn" key.

Press the shift key and while holding down the shift key hit the f6 key located above your row of number keys,if that doesnt do it then look for a key on the top row that has a picture of a pad lock.Hope this helps,let me know,Thanks.

From you're description it sounds like the "numb lock" check my be on. (numbers lock). On most keyboards you turn it on when you want to use the numbers pad. Or it may also be some other key shortcut on that keyboard which switches it to a numbers pad.

your laptop should have a blue FN key (Function) that will work in conjunction with other blue keys on teh keyboard. most laptops this is located in the lower left, next to the ctrl key. Look to the right top on your keyboard for a one labeled numlk. hold down teh left FN key and tap the right num lk key and you just turned off the numbers lock.

There is another option that is a little more intense - if interested let me know that laptop type you have.

On Thinkpads laptops the keys on the right hand side double up as the number keypad. To switch on the Number lock key pad on - press and hold the Shift key and press the NumLk/ScrLk key, it is above the F11 key, the Num lock LED will also light up. Press these keys again to turn off the Numer Lock.

Solution#1: Accidentally pressing Sft+Numlock key combination will activate & inactivates ten key pad. (You'll see light enabled in padlock symbol with a number in it [i.e.beside ALL CAPS symbol on your lap monitor]).

The IBM laptop has a key on the top row on the right side.It has two functions. One function is the scroll lock on the bottom of the key.The other function is the numbers lock which is at the top of the key.To unlock the right side of the keyboard when numbers are coming up instead of letters, hold down the shift key and the numbers lock key and that will unlock it.

Look at the top keys on the laptop. There are icons under the main key. One of them would be the num lock icon. You would be pressing the Fn key then that key to unlock it.

hold down the alt key and then type 0169 using number pad if possible. Make sure num lock is off.

If that is not possible, then hold down the ctrl - alt then press c.
