Low battery My refurbished Garmin worked fine until the battery ran low. It keeps cutting off in the car because the battery went dead.I hooked it up to the car with the accessory included but it keeps cutting off. It charges when I hook it up to my PC. What is my problem?

Re: Low battery

I had the same problem with mine shutting off ...turns out my battery was completely dead and the car charger just was not charging the unit. I charged it with the usb overnight and it worked fine:) I have yet to figure out if it is the car charger or the actual back piece the suctions to the window and attached to the battery but for now it works! Also another helpful hint for garmin C330 the Motorola Razor chargers work too I am using the house charger to charge it the wall:)

Re: Low battery

It sounds like the cigarette lighter charger/adapter isn't working.

1. First, does your cigarette lighter socket have +12VDC on it?
Try plugging in some other device that you know is good and see if the socket powers that device ok. If yes, read on below. If not, you probably have a blown fuse that powers the cigarette lighter socket. Use your vehicles owner manual to find where it is and how to replace it.

2. When you are using the Garmin cigarette lighter adapter, does the light come on the adapter? When the unit is powered by an external source (PC or Car) there should be a lightning bolt symbol that is shown over the battery bar graph display. Do you see the symbol? Try looking for the symbol when you connect it to the PC. You should also see it when using the car adapter. If not, the car adapter is defective. There is a fuse inside the Garmin car adapter plug that goes into the cigarette socket. Try looking to see if it's blown. If not, the adapter electronics is defective.

The reason why the unit keeps shutting off is because the battery isn't being charged.

Good Luck,
- Jim

The unit won't says "low battery". i

I don't know where you live - so I don't know who nearby can work on it. Regardless, my suggestion is to return it to Garmin and let them handle it. Since your nuvi 760 is out of warranty, Garmin will charge $99 to "factory overhaul" it. What this means really is, you will get a factory rebuilt nuvi 760. Garmin will not fix yours and return it to you - but rather they will send one that that belonged to someone else that they refurbished. This means really fast "turn around" instead of waiting for yours to be fixed. In short, you will not get the same one you sent in. The refurbished unit will come with the latest up - to - date maps and have a 90 day factory warranty.

Check out Garmin's page to learn more about this overhaul service and to take advantage of it. If you do send it in - your data will be lost. Garmin will erase all your personal data, photos, etc. from the nuvi (and they won't put it on the replacement) - so if there's anything on it that you want - be sure to copy it before sending in.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.

Today i turned on my garmin after a few months, it was working will for about 2 min, then it lost satellites, so I turned it off, then tried to turn it back on, but it never turned back on. the battery...

If the GPS's internal battery is allowed to discharge too far, it will not be possible to recharge with the card charger, until it is brought up to a certain level. Connect the nuvi to a computer with USB cable overnight. This will trickle charge the internal battery to a level that will allow the car charger / cradle to keep the GPS charged from that point on. Anytime the car charger fails to recharge the internal battery, the USB charge method will have to be performed first.

Low battery, won't charge

connect the garmin to your computer using the usb port. It will start charging then. For some reason when the battery goes dead in this unit the only way to charge it is with computer. the car adaptor will not work once the battery gets real low.

My garmin cannot start

Hi there... If you mean it doesn't do anything when you push/slide the on button, then try this... (mine did the same thing just yesterday and was a result of a very low battery - would not even start with 12v cord in from the car!)...

Find the USB cable that came with your Garmin. Hook the USB cable to your computer, with the other end hooking up to your Garmin (where the normal car cable goes).

The Garmin will probably turn on instantly once you have hooked it up to your PC (assuming the PC is turned on and in Windows etc). This will actually charge the Garmin battery too while hooked up the PC, so leave it connected for a little while (a couple of hours).

If it doesnt switch on automatically when connected to the PC, try using the slide ON switch. Once it is active, it will be in PC transfer mode (assuming you have an SD card in the card slot of the Garmin). Now is a good time to use the Garmin WebUpdate application (available from to see if any software updates are available for your unit. If so, go ahead and install them. I updated mine yesterday!

Once you get it working via connection to the PC and the battery has charged up a little, take it back to the car and keep the 12v car cable plugged in all the time. This will continue to charge it up as it is being used (while the car is running of course). You should find that after u get it working on the PC it will again work in the car too...

i think it just turns it off for some reason permanently when it gets a really low/dead battery and only the PC hookup seems to re-activate it... Also, apparently you can hold the slide switch on the Garmin in the ON position for 7 seconds to reset the unit, but that didn't work for me... Worth a try anyway!

Data lost

Sounds like the memory battery ran low. Did you get a "Memory battery low" warning message when you switched it on? If so then that confirms it, and I'm afraid your waypoints are lost.

As for the memory battery it will take on some charge if you just put in fresh AA batteries. How much charge depends on the age of the GPS, mine is over 10 years old and the memory cell is pretty much dead now.

Grmin may or may not replace the cell for you depeniding on the age of the device. If you want to do it yourself it's a very fidldy job requiring some expertise with a fine pointied solderign iron. The case is held together with solicone sealant aroung the joining edges - there are no plastic catches - one piece of the case has a sort of trough around the edge that the other piece/side slots into and the trough was fileld with silicone sealant and the two pieces sandwiched together. It's not a very strong glue though so it can be prised apart with a fine knife and patience.

Garmin c530 Streetpilot

I just called tech support at 1-800-800-1020 and I was told that the battery on the unit may be so low that it won't power on even with a power source. The unit actually uses more power than it's taking in from the car charger. I was told to plug it into the computer using the USB cable and give it a few hours to replenish the battery. Apparently it should be plugged into the computer ever so often to keep the battery from getting too low.

Garmin ique 3600 won't turn on after battery goes dead

I had the identical problem; I called Garmin and a new battery = $50, installed only @ the factory. I tried buying one off eBay, but those batteries spec out ok but don't have the pigtail leads required for my M3 (probably would work just fine for M5). I soldered on the pigtail from the old battery from my M3, then put it all back together. Works! However, the new battery ultimately drains down over several hours so when I'm not using it I have to trickle-charge the thing constantly. Bottom line: I suggest sending your M3 back to the factory for a new battery rather than trying to replace it on your own.

My garmin c330 will not charged

Disassemble then disconnect speaker/battery connector from printed circuit board. Individually cut the red, green and black wires from the battery. Tape over the wire ends of the connector and battery wires that were cut. Re-assemble and unit will work when plugged into 12Vdc. If you want to use the battery, it must be charged with an external Li-Ion charger using red + and black - for the charging connections to the battery. With the connector to the pc board disconnected, solder and tape the battery wires to the connector wires where cut. Re-assemble and it will work & charge.
