I cannot tell you what the error is, but perhaps I can give you some tips on how to solve the problem. First, try to read the SD card on your computer. Is it formatted? if not, format to FAT 32. Are there any file structures? If so, erase and format the SD card to FAT 32.
If these activities do not work, then try with another SD or SDHC card (type 10 if possible) and see if the error is replicated.
From there, recommend contacting Canon customer support for assistance.
If your dad's computer includes an SD card slot, it can be compatible with any camera that records to an SD card simply by removing the SD card from the camera and inserting into the computer.
Easiest way...use a separate card reader to download to a folder you create on your desktop. From there, you can import to imovie or use Quicktime to view it.
