What is the voltage and polarity for a Verbatim 96639 External HDD?

Hi J T,

Your drive will be 12V which is standard but polarity is unfortunately not standard. I've checked the usual places for the answer you need but as with many re packagers of hard drives, the only data regarding the power supply is that it is included.

The best solution, to avoid a chance of an unfortunate polarity related mishap, is to simply purchase a new enclosure rather than attempt to locate the correct adapter. They can be bought at virtually any computer parts vendor and most big box stores. If you insist on finding the adapter, your best bet is to look over the enclosure case and find the declaration sticker which should already include this information, however, even armed with the correct information, buying a loose power adapter is dicey at best and you could very well end up with the wrong one. If you do not have the skills yourself to transfer the drive to a new enclosure, stop into your local PC repair shop and they can undoubtedly perform the transplant for you at some nominal fee.

Hope this helps,

I have a smartdisk usbflb100 external hard drive, but can't locate the usb cable or the power supply. is it worth trying to find replacements, or should i just move on? i intend to use it as a back up...

You can open the enclosure, and extract the disk-drive, and then attach it as a "slave" disk-drive into any desktop computer, probably just long-enough to copy the less-than-100GB onto your 'C:' drive. Then, buy a new 500GB or 1000GB or 2000GB external drive, for under $100,
and backup to it.

Or, you could buy an "empty" enclosure (with a power-supply and a cable), and "transplant" the disk-drive into that new enclosure.

Yes, any external storage device should be used as a "backup" device,
i.e., ALWAYS create an ADDITIONAL copy of your important files,
rather than INCORRECTLY using the device as the ONLY location for your files.

Help! My drive suddenly "died". The green

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

The 5v power pin on the AC adapter of my SmartDisk Crossfire external hard drive has been broken. How do I get a replacement AC Adapter?

Take your SmartDisk to any computer-store.

They can open the case, remove the disk-drive,
and mount the disk-drive in a new "empty" external casing,
with a new power-supply.
for a sample of various "empty" cases, for about $30.

What external power does SmartDisk FireLite FWFL120-N take?

Many USB power supplies will have the right plug. I picked one up by buying a cheap USB hub, What you want to look for (most likely on the bottom of the power supply) is VOLTAGE Output: 5.0 VDC, POWER Output: 1.0 amp or (1000ma) and the center hole is the positive side. I have even seen some BluTooth earpiece charges that supply what you need.

Hope that this will help.

Please i need the power adapter rating for seagate

Have you got the original power adapter?
If so the voltage details are printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter.
If the external USB Seagate hard drive houses a 31/2" drive then it requires an power adapter that provides +12 volts and +5 volts both supplying approx 2000mA of current.
If the Seagate uses a 21/2" (laptop) hard drive then it only requires +5 volts power adapter.
The only problem is the power connector to the external drive, make sure it suits the external hard drive unit and the power pins are correctly wired for the Seagate. If the polarity of the plug is incorrect lt wired (ie reverse polarity) then it could damage the USB hard drive and adapter case.

I cant get my firelite smartdisk to come up on my computer. I have been using for about 2 years without any troubles, I have tried another cable, the light is on but still unrecognizable... please help

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the external drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your external drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your external Drive to be detected automatically.

Hope this helps you out.

SmartDisk Crossfire Desktop Drive

Usually this is a problem with the usb port not being able to supply enough power to the drive. Often, units like this will come with two usb plugs on one cable to increase the current supplied to the drive. If the drive has an input for external power (some do, some don't), then using external power would help.
