DVD Burning When I burn backup copies of my favorate DVDs the copy, when played back, breaks up runs slow and freezes alot during the playing making these dvds usuless. I'm using DVD shrink, an LG GSA-4120B burner and DVD+R media. The burner is using all default settings and I have not changed it since installing it a few years ago. Hope you can help. Also what is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R media and which is the better one to use? James

As stated I'm using DVD shrink combined with nero which shrinks the file size so that it fits onto a standard if required. So file size is not the problem.
As stated I'm using DVD+R and not rewritable dvds.
I'm using a LG GSA-4120B burner which I believe is a very respected unit.

Hi James

I would like to inform some possible facts like brand of DVD Media, environmental facts such dust particles on DVD-R Burner and Player's lenses. Periodical maintenance of CD DVD devices by using lens cleaner kit will improve quality. You can change the media brand. You can use brands like Kodak, Maxell, Philips, Sony, LG, Verbatim or any trusted known media brands. You may install newer and different version of softwares to burn such as Ashampoo or Nero (both of them has fully functional trial versions). Also source of the video is important. If the video has different formats during conversion compatibility might loss. You can check with different formats that can be compatible for DVD conversion.

    About DVD-R and DVD+R;

They are just two competing types, most common product is DVD-R in market, DVD-R very compatible for most players. However DVD+R is also product of improved technology, It stores more data as it has more than 1 layer. Due to higher price and lesser playback compatibility makes DVD+R less popular. So you dont have to worry change type of the DVD. You can continue to use DVD-R However the brand makes sense.

    Good Luck

DVD-R is better as you informed you are storing DVD video on it. That will be most compatible solution.

Well here's some info on DVD-R and DVD+R first of all.

DVD-R
-compatible with standalone DVD Players.
-non-rewriteable format
-compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and ROM'S
-about 4.37 computer GB.
-allows only one layer

DVD+R
-DVD+R is a non-rewritable
-compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and ROMs
-4.37 computer GB* DVDs
-allows multiple layers for one disc which is why they are more expensive.

As you can see they're quite similar, the companies that created them are different, however.

Well im off now, DVD burners are not my area of expertise but there's many experts who know alot about them.

Good luck.

Well first of all, as far as have been informed, making backup copies of dvds is illegal. But im not here to critisize you. Your discs that you are copying the movie onto might not be big enough to hold the file. And your laser in your computer might not also be up to the challenge. There should not be any problems with any discs, but you may want to try using standard dvds, not rewritable dvds.

Hope this helps :)

It's when I play my dvds of Hogans Heroes that the message comes up 'incorrect disc'. I can play any other dvd I have and it plays. what gives?

Your Hogans Hero discs are probably for a different region.
Check how to change your regions in the manual.
Some only give you four and five changes during the life of the box! Copyright protection.

You could make region free copies of your favourites by burning those titles onto blanks with Anydvd from Slysoft, and dvdshrink.

Hi, I have a plenty of region 3 DVDs that I would like to play with my region2 PS3. Can you help pls

  1. Take the DVD from another region that you want to play on your PS3 and put it in your computer's DVD-RW drive.
  2. 2 Open DVD-copying software you have on your computer. Examples would include DVDXCopy Platinum and Nero Burning Rom. Anything that can make a straight copy of a DVD will do.
  3. 3 Use the DVD-copier software to make a copy of your DVD. Both Nero and DVDXCopy Platinum will make direct copies of commercial DVDs, so they'll both work well for these purposes. Making a copy will remove any region coding the disc has and effectively make it "Region 0," or "all-region." As long as you own the DVD you are copying, you are doing nothing illegal.
  4. 4 Put the copied DVD in the PlayStation 3's disc tray. Despite originally being from another region of the world, it will now play perfectly in your PlayStation 3.

Hi , There are several causes possible :
1° Try burning at the lowesrt speed possible to avoid errors ;
2° Maybe you have purchased neww blancos and maybe they come from another manufacturer .
3° Your burning device is out of order or the firmware is outdated . Check on the manufacture's site to verify available updates .
4° Try burning with another device . Borrow a friend's external writer for instance .
5° Try ripping and burning withe another software . DVDFab HD Decrypter is one of the best and some of it's package tools are freeware .

Im trying to figure out how to burn a dvd dont know how to do it

Before you decide to burn a DVD, it is important to know what kind of DVD you would like to burn. The type of DVD will usually determine the process you use to go about burning. The three most common types of DVDs to burn are Data DVD's, Multimedia Files to a DVD and making a copy and burning a commercial DVD. The burning process will be determined by the type of data you want to burn. You could do three possible actions:
  1. Burn Data to a DVD
  2. Burn Multimedia Files to a DVD
  3. Copy and Burn a Commercial DVD

Burning Data to a DVD Ordinary data such as documents, spreadsheets, database files and backup files require only general DVD burning programs. The data that you burn can be viewed on any type of computer with a DVD drive. Popular DVD burning software programs include Nero 9 and Super DVD Creator 9.8.8.
You will need to purchase or download any of the DVD burning software titles that are available on the market. For some computers that are purchased new, DVD burning software already comes installed and configured for your machine and DVD burner. You just need to open up your DVD burner software, choose to burn a data DVD and follow the instructions. You can usually burn a full length DVD (about 4.7 GB of data) in less than 20 minutes and even quicker with high speed DVD burners.

Burning Multimedia Files to a DVD
Multimedia files are usually larger files that include video either recorded from a TV set, camcorder or digital camera or downloaded from the internet. You may also want to convert an old VHS tape to a more user friendly DVD.

Copying and Burning a Commercial DVD
Many people use their DVD burner to burn copies of commercial DVDs. In most parts of the world, it is illegal to copy a commercial DVD and sell or distribute it. However, you may want to make a copy for archiving purposes.
There are many tools that can copy a commercial DVD. However, apart from the normal DVD burner and DVD burning software, you will also need special software that can decode or crack the digital rights management. It is also important to note that besides cracking the code and copying the data of the commercial DVD, you may need to shrink the file.
Most commercial DVDs are dual layer and have between 7 and 8.4 GB of data. These files must be compressed to fit on a normal 4.7 GB DVD. Once you have cracked the commercial DVD and compressed it, you can use ordinary DVD burning software to burn your DVD.
