Question about Sylvania Dual Deck DVD/VCR

1 Answer

Power surge causing no power?

We lost power a couple of hours ago for just a few seconds. After the power outage, or power surge whatever you want to call it, we tried to use our Sylvania VCR/DVD player model No. DV220SL8, and it will not turn on. The VCR/DVD player was the only item on the wall of the tv that was not plugged into a power strip. It is the only thing that won't work. This is a new player, in fact I just got it for Christmas of 2007. Could the power outage have fried my new VCR/DVD player?

Panasonic dmr-es30v will not turn on

The circuit board may look good, but a power surge can damage the tiny resistors, diodes, and transistors. Any one of those mention can render the unit inoperable.

Panasonic SA-PT480 will not turn on after power outage while REQ displayed on unit display

it sounds to me like you have endured a power surge and it has cooked the unit // i would replace it as surges do so much damage it normally writes the unit off but your power company is liable to replace it (if it was a surge)

Blinking standby light, dead dvd player

Hello illeanaceres,

I'm sorry to hear about the bad news, I had something similar happen to me around a month ago.

Honestly there is not much you can do if it is damaged due to a power surge. Resetting it would be the normal procedure.

Surge protectors only protect equipment up to a certain amount of joules. Basically if the lightning is powerful enough it can damage electronics with that initial surge. You should replace your surge protectors every few years if it is 2-3 years old then it may not be as effective.

Post back if you have anymore questions or comments. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

"could not repair disc" after power outage

If this happened after a power outage and not a hit/drop then it's probably fried the board to the hard disk, you can often get another board from the same model drive and fix it, by swapping the boards over.

Cannot unlock ratings on my Panasonic DMR-ES20!

Apparently it is caused by power outages.
Here's the fix: Put in DVD mode.
• While the disc tray is open, press and hold [* REC] and [PLAY/x1.3] on the main unit at the same time for 5 or more seconds. Press until you see INIT on front screen of unit.

Playing dvd's

could be a ratings problem. Perform a reset by holding down your channel up and channel down buttons on the unit itself simultaneously until it shuts off. Wait a few seconds and turn it back on. Give it a try. Good Luck - Tamara

Power surge

I doubt you'll be able to find a service manual for this. You are best off opening up the unit to find the damaged resistors and replace them yourself.
