GE side-by-side freezer not freezing.

I have a GE PSS25MGNAWW that all of the sudden not freezing any more. I've notice that the ICE has thawed and froze at a certain point. Is there a quick way to try to isolate the problem? I tried defrosting it and notice high build up of ice in the evaporator. Any help is much appreciated

Defrost the unit until all ice melts( force defrost by unplugging the unit for several hours). Then plug and start the unit check if the blower inside is operating. If no air present in the vents check for stock up blower motor. If blower is operating and air is present in vents. Mas be the unit is out of gas.

Defrost entire unit, put food in coolers with ice and unplug. Wait 24 hours with doors open. Any clogs in freon lines should be gone, plug unit back in and see how it works.

The water is leaking from the Ice dispenser and the food is thawing

Seems like the freezer is not getting cold enough. If the ice maker was leaking the water would freeze. It would not cause the food to thaw.

Freezer not cooling enough to make ice.

well countney778 it sounds like either your drain is clogged upo and holding water in the freezer or your defrost timer is bad. the timer shoiuld be by the thermostat area and the drain is at the boittom of the coil that is currently freezing. also look underneith and if you see abunch of dirt then you may have to clean the coil on the bottom of the unit. use a shop vac and a long brush to clean.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

Freezer thawing and refreezing

The freezer is supposed to thaw at least everyday. Only, you usually kant tell because it doesn't do it long enough to melt the food so you don't notice it. You have a couple of components to check here. 1 is the defrost timer, which unless it has been changed recently, has the same pre determined defrost time. So you would have noticed by now. Next is the defrost termination switch. If you have excess ice on the evaporator, this will make the defrost longer than before. Unless the switch is going bad causing the defrost to go extra long, there is an excess amount of ice that is more than usual. Bad door seal will cause this. A slightly low freon charge. And a thermostat that is malfunctioning, causing the freezer to run continuously, will make excess ice buildup in the freezer. I would make sure the kids aren't leaving the door open and the gaskets are good. If not the case, call a repairman.
