Same thing here, I got my camera in Dec. 06 and it just started doing this today June 3, 2008. Sometimes pics are too dark, sometimes they are bright white from too much flash and the flash makes a strange popping sound when it will be too bright. This sucks!

I have this problem where images are either too dark or too bright. I looked in the user's manual in the trouble shooting section and as per the instructions changed the Metering mode to "Multi AF". This helped a bit in a way that now images are never too bright but the dark pictures still persists around 6 out of 10 snaps.

    Please help.

Same problem! 1 years use. Any possible solutions yet? This seems to be more of a hardware problem that a switch setting because you can shoot the same subject repeatedly under the exact same conditions and get too bright, too dark or a normal shot.

How do i get rid of the shutter delay and multi flash while taking a picture with my sony dsc-w55

If you have your flash set to "red-eye flash", it will fire "pre-flashes" to prevent redeye in your subjects. You can turn off that feature and set it for normal flash. As far as shutter delay is concerned, all you need to do is press the shutter button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus (it will beep) and then you can re-compose the picture and press the rest of the way when the moment is right.

The Screen always shows black and it takes all black pictures

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.
