You need to plug the headphone jack in the right port. it is usually in the innermost left part. Also, make sure your sound card drivers are installed properly.

Download the proper audio sound driver and install properly then restart the computer. then plug in the headphone in the jack, your computer will automatically detect the plug in jack. means your sound will working properly. if not than change the headphone.

Check the port, make sure nothing is in their.
Make sure its not he headphones/earbuds your wearing.
If none of that helps, take it to a Staples or Radio Shack and ask them to check it for you.

Headphones won't turn off speakers

Try updating your driver from the manufacturer's website. Otherwise the metal detection spring inside your audio port on your computer might be broken, not telling the computer that you've plugged in headphones.

My sound does not switch to just headphones when they are plugged into my HP dc5100mt. The sound keeps coming from both the speaker and the headphones which creates a distraction in my household. I have...

the problem wont be in the software and if you are plugging the headphones into the front port on the computer it will still play on bolth sets of speakers this is because the computer doesn't recognize that the plug on front is being used, it isnt a problem because the computer is not designed to do so either so if i where you id just turn the speakers of or unplug them when you use the headphones.

Polk computer speakers work in laptop but not on desktop computer

desktops now a days have more than one plug for the speakers. try playing some music and play which hole works.

if there is a 5.1 or surround on the desktop then most likely the light green jack isnt stereo out but rather unamplified signal. thus when you plug head phones into it the internal amp drives the headphones, but wants the computer to drive the speakers.

try plugging it into the black one... or play pick a hole till it works.

Mic

If your headphones have a single plug you cannot plug these into a regular speaker connection or headphone connction and get mic and sound, you will need a headset that has 2 separate plugs (one for Mic and one for headphone) or a splitter you can get a radio shack. Most headsets have only one plug and there are connections for both the mic and the headphones on this plug, but the headphone connection on the computer has only connections for the headphone and therefore cannot detect the microphone.
