Hi,
There Could be many Problems. Make sure that you replaced a DVD Drive which is Compatible with this Model. Have you tried to use a Different Brand of DVD? If not, use it. It might make a Difference.
The most likely problem is bad media. Are you using a major name brand DVD blank? Is the DVD itself clean? Some players are better able to cope with poorly made DVDs. CD's, having a lot less info on them often work in DVD drives that won't accept a DVD. Commercial DVDs are high quality, and therefore, again, easier for a slightly finicky drive to read.Try burning a DVD using a major brand, the kind you buy one per package, not 25 or 50. Let me know if that works.
If problem remains Unsolved, the only suggestion I have is to try to determine whether the problem is in the DVD drive or software. If you can borrow an External DVD Drive that is either USB or Firewire, make sure it can read a DVD that your built-in one can't. Then plug it into your Mac and see if it can read the same DVD. If it can, then it's your DVD drive that is faulty. If it cannot, then you have a software problem which I would suggest you fix by reinstalling the Mac OS from the original installation CDs or DVD. You can do this without losing your files. Just follow the directions in the Installer carefully.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Your mac cannot find an operating system. Re-install the operating system using the 2 discs Apple gave you. If that don't work, then you need a new hard drive. 2.5" 120 GB laptop hard drive IDE/ATA are the specs you need. If it says SATA, then you got the wrong hard drive.

Powerbook G4 is not working When I put a CD in 2C the computer spits it back out without reading

You need to replace the optical drive. Go to web site of Other World Computing and order a CD/DVD super drive which will burn/play discs and even burn on dual layer discs. Cost about $80 US plus your free labor to install the thing.

MacBook won't recognize my Lacie Rugged Hard Disk. Disk utility will see it but won't verify it nor will it repair it. says it needs to be reformatted yet it won't even let me initialize it. it is brand...

Is your MacBook as fast as the Lacie Rugged Hard Disk is?

Because solid state drive wasn't available on MacBook Pro at the initial time when it launched. Hard drives on all current Apple laptops are equipped with Sudden Motion Sensor technology. In fact, the Apple laptops that came with Sudden Motion Sensor are: All Intel-based Apple portables such as the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, PowerBook G4 computers starting with PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz), and iBook G4 computers starting with iBook G4 (Mid 2005) have Sudden Motion Sensor technology. You MacBook may not have come with that technology that could be the reason you are unable to connect it.

Powerbook will not read or write a fresh dvd-rw

You cannot write onto a dvd-rw that has been formatted for Windows using a Mac Superdrive. Most likely, when you put the dvd-rw into a Windows machine w/Visa, you erased it, but actually it formatted the disc for Fat32 or other Windows format. Mac's are often brand-sensitive often when it comes to DVD. I've had luck with Memorex and HP, or Apple has their own which will work (from an Apple Store or Best Buy.)

DVD player skips audio and/or frames

PowerBook G4 is at least a five-year-old machine at this point. A DVD drive can **** in lots of dust in five years. Try hooking up to an external DVD drive. If it plays the same discs with no problem, you need a cleaning or replacement. Frankly, an external DVD drive is cheaper than replacing your internal drive.

Disc drive ejects blank discs...plays dvds

Hi Again,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Work!

You need to let me know what type of PowerBook G4 it is as the instructions for each are different. However, what I will do is give you the links to the appropriate sites and some instructions for them:
  1. First you need to reset the Power Management Unit (PMU). To do this refer to THIS page. A little way down is a heading 'PowerBook and iBook models covered in this document'. Select the model listed in blue below this which will take you lower down the page to the instructions for your model.
  2. After restarting try your drive again. If it doesn't work, try a dvd drive cleaning disc.
  3. If it still doesn't work your drive is Kaput! If you're near Kent in the UK then I can help you out. If not find a local Apple Specialist who can replace the drive for you.
All the best
Sean
