Question about Maytag Atlantis MDE7400AY Electric Dryer

The timer was a little tough to get started sometimes, I'd have to pull the knob out and push it back in several times before it would start.

The start switch is going out. You will have to replace the whole timer on this model. Check the first 2 numbers of your serial number if it is 10 - 15 the part number is 33002855 if the first 2 numbers are 16 or greater the part number is 33002803. Please rate me after reading.

On the back of the timer switch put a momentary push button switch [buy a SPST, OFF-(ON)] between wires yellow (34) and red (31) and install the switch into the console. To start the dryer set the timer and pull out to the first stop which normally works OK, and then push and release the new switch to start the dryer, problem solved for less than $5 and 60 minutes work. Note the switch should only make a circuit when depressed, once released the switch breaks the circuit. The wires mentioned do not need to be cut, just attach to each of them so the switch in essence touches these two wires together to start the dryer.

Well sounds like a new timer is needed or timer motor - but these mechanical machines are difficult to diagnose as they dont give fault codes. The timer is a mechanical part and subject to wear and tear - cogs and motors wear out. Modern electronic machines don't have this problem, and timers are very expensive and difficult to fit for an amature. How long have you had the machine? I know top loaders last longer - but maybe time to upgrade to a new one

There seems to be a short in the timer.... it comes on but shuts off mid cycle and sometimes only after a minute or two. When I touch the timer knob it comes back on.

If it happens every time you touch the timer knob, it does sound like the timer is at fault. Do you just barely turn the knob If so it does sound suspiciously that the timer is at fault. do you have to "push the timer IN?" to start it and restart it?

I have a Kenmore gas dryer model 97591220. wont

Disconnect power to the dryer and remove the screws attaching the console rear panel to the console and pull the panel off.

Inspect the wires connected to the timer and ensure a snug fit connection. Clean the connectors and terminals then reseat it several times to ward off dirt within the connectors.

Reconnect power to the dryer and start it; replace the timer (part number 3398195 ) if the dryer still won't stay running. Unplug the dryer and pull the timer knob off the console. Remove the screws securing the timer to the bracket and remove it. Secure the new timer in place then disconnect the wires from the old timer one at a time and connect it to the corresponding terminal on the new timer.

Push the timer back into position on the console and secure the console rear panel in place.

Machine fills up with water then when its suppose to agitate it just stops working will turn timer & push knob in & out & reset then it will work

How long do you let it sit after the water fills up, somtimes the timer will take a little extra time to get to the point that starts the agitation cycle.
When it dose this, without pulling the knob out, turn the disk on the timer clockwise 1 click and see if it starts up agitating, if it dose dont worry about it it is normal

Hi. your problem is actually a rather complicated one.

Timer and selector switches The timer switch is usually the largest dial on the main control panel. It can be either a mechanical device much like a simple clock, or completely electronic with just a digital readout.

The timer runs the washing machine in a pre-determined pattern. It provides the electricity to all of the washing machine components at the correct time and for the correct length of time.

The Start switch is usually part of the timer knob. When you set the timer to the proper cycle, you either pull or push the timer knob to start the cycle.

The selector switches or knobs vary from machine to machine. Most washing machines have one or several switches or knobs on the control panel besides the Timer/Start switch. These let you adjust certain settings; for example, the water temperature, spin speed, timer cycle, and so on. Normally, the washing machine completes the cycle selected on the timer, regardless of how you set these switches and knobs.

Timer switch on GE washer

You don't state your exact model number, and the number off the timer is not the actual part number (it's some sort of part stamping number). Most likely what has happened is a plastic tab on the timer housing (which normally goes into a slot in the metal, and thus holds the timer at that point) has broken off. The fix is to replace the timer, but instead of buying a new timer, I usually fashion a Z type piece of metal which I can put one screw though into the metal and the other side holding the timer against the metal. Takes a little work, but it's a lot cheaper than a new timer.
If you want to take the timer knob off, you have to pull it out and use a thin tool, like a small screwdriver, to push the plastic clip off the shaft behind the knob, allowing the knob to then come off the shaft. Push the clip back on the knob when off, so that all you have to do to reinstall the knob is push it on and it will lock on the shaft again.
