My Dell Dimension 5150 has always had a loud fan but it has gotten significantly worse over the past two weeks. It now sounds like I am at the World Cup! I believe I have traced the noise to the fan in...

No. You can take apart the power supply, detach the fan, clean it, clean the power supply(capacitors, core), put it together and see if it makes the same sound.
Also check the fan of the CPU cooler, you may have to clean that too. But be careful when you remove the cooler from the CPU. You will need silica paste to protect the core of the processor. You can find it in small 5 grams packs. Clean the back of the cooler and the processor with some medicinal alcohol, let them dry and then put them back. Do not forget about the paste. It is a very important component in order to keep the processor at a decent temperature.
Also check if the graphics card has a fan. If so, clean it too.
Put everything back and it should work perfectly.

States "cpu temperature error" press F1 to resume, but computer just shuts down again. fans seem to be working properly

Hi the problem you are having is that the processor is getting to hot and your computer is shutting down to prevent damage, the chances are the air vents are full of dust and will need cleaning out, these are the vents that sit under the fan and on top of the processor.

if you know what your doing then the fan will need taking off and also the heat sink and when this is off you will need to clean off all the old heat sink paste from the top of the processor and also the bottom of the heat sink, you will then need to get some new heat sink paste and put this on top of the processor a good layer then let it dry for 15 to 20min then refit the heatsink and fan then leave it for another 15 to 20 min for it to settle then try switching it back on

make sure its unplugged whilst you are messing inside the computer,

if you are unsure what you are doing then please leave it to someone who does or look on the net for a guide on, how to replace heat sink paste on a processor, then hit search and that should list sites that will guide you through the process.

if after doing the above your still getting the same message then the chances are the damage is all ready done and the processor will need replacing.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

Dell Dimension C5100 Yesterday it was fine and today it turns on but no visual on the screen. Changed monitor that wasn't it, disconnected the video from the on board video output and installed a pci...

you need to open cpu cabinet. Open back cover of cpu then refix the RAM memory. Pull cmos cell from motherboard for 10 minutes then put it back then all settings defaults. Make sure RAM is working fine. Try with another RAM .If you use 2 RAM memory then check with only 1 RAM 1 by 1. Open processor fan and processor then put it back . Clean dust from all parts . Reconnect both connection to harddrive. Make sure motherboard don't touch the cabinet. Remove pci card if any reattach vga card if you use pci vga card.Pull cmos cell cell from motherboard for 10 minutes then reconnect it.Then check. Let me know if you need further assistance. My computers cooling fan keeps speeding up and slowing down is that a good thing or a bad thing

I'm assuming your desktop has an AMD processor?
AMD have a process called "quiet and cool" this basically speeds up the fan when the processor is under load and getting hot or slows it down when the processor isn't working as hard.

Power Supply is the highly probable culprit on this. Call your local manufacturer to replace the power supply. Also, try connecting it directly to the power outlet (if it's connected to a power strip). Also, check the fans on the computer. All should be spinning and air should be coming out of it. Feel the air coming out, is it warm or hot. If it's hot then I suggest you really call your computer manufacturer or who you got this from since this needs more troubleshooting and probable replacement of parts inside.

What diameter is the processor fan?

its not a standard diameter for a pentium4, ime not sure of the diameter as dell does not list it and the actual fan is on the case , ported to the pentium4 cpu covered with a heat sinc. Your best bet is to physically measure it or take it with you when you buy a new fan. If you have the outside dimentions ,the correct screw hole pattern and it fits under the plastic shroud, you have the correct fan..

I need to know if I put it back together right

If you pulled it apart and put it back together but now it won't work properly, try checking your IDE cables to the hard drive/cd-rom, make sure they aren't connected backwards. Otherwise just carefully look over the entire board, be sure that the processor, heat sink and fan assembly are all intact and connected properly, do the same with the RAM, power connection, any expansion cards.

Hi I opened a work computer Dell GX260 to clean it out as a favour for my boss. I've removed the processor fan in the process. I then decided that I don't have the right equipment to properly clean it....

You confirm all the connectors are properly connected. Check the power supply connector and the power button connector. Remove the cpu fan connector and refix it properly. Ther is no other chance for failure.
