Restoring my black iPod nano

i tried to turn on my iPod to listen to music. but when i did, it had a message that said "Please use iTunes to restore your iPod" so i went onto iTunes, and it said "please restore your iPod before connecting it to iTunes." but when i try to do THAT, i have to do all this stuff that takes about 5 hours, and STILL doesnt work. what should i do now? plz help me.

- we placed the ipod in a dock and went black and it was hot . i have tried my pressing menu and on button many times and it is as black as it was for the first time- lpomalesd
