Question about Empire DV-215 Direct Vent Natural Gas Heater

1 Answer

The pilot light lights and stays lit but then when I turn up the gas and turn up the theromostat when the big burners startup the pilot light reduces and then after a few seconds the whole thing shuts down.

I just poked out two wasps and lots of mud from deep in the regulator which was hanging from the hose all summer. It didn't help. I still get a weak pilot light. Any suggestions?

Hi,

The most likely cause of your problem is a dirty pilot burner orifice. To clean it you would need to dismantle the pilot burner and run a tiny wire through the orifice. You need to do this even if you can see daylight through the hole.

If it still does not work, you need to replace Thermocouple.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

You could probably have a bad gas valve or Thermocouple. If your heater is more than 6 years old replacing the gas valve may not be worth the cost since there aren't too many more years left in the tanks life expectancy.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

I light pI lot and it stays lit burners light and reach temp but then burners wont relight to keep temp unless I tap gas valve..is it my gas valve

A lot of pilot lights have a thermal coupler... the pilot light must be lit for several min to open the coupler so the pilot light will not go out.... the newer systems use an electronic ignition and no pilot light and need power to autostart but the coupler may be gone if you are holding that pilot start button down for several min and the pilot light is still going out..ps.. leave it in pilot mode for several min after initial start up before turning turning full burner operation operation operation operation operation operation operation it will snuff out the pilot light.

The pilot light will only stay lit when you hold the pilot reset button in, as soon as you let the button out the pilot light goes out and the actual burners never come on. Any ideas?

Gas line is clogged if your pilot lite goes out - They got rid of pilot stoves because the pilot was always lit and using gas.

And without a lit pilot no way you can get the burner to ignite unless you use a match, assuming you have gas going to the burner!

When I try to use my Thermolaire model SU402E, the pilot lights( and stays lit), but the main burner will NOT ignite.. any suggestions as to what could cause this if the pilot stays lit?

Bad igniter? When you 1st try it the gas valve will give enough gas that you would get the burner lit if the igniter was glowing red. If you're desperate you can light the igniter area w/ an aim n flame, but you definitely want to do that w/ caution and crank up your t-stat so the furnace stays on awhile Cuz you'll have to do it again for heat or buy an igniter($40 or so)

Pilot light stays lit but burners do not ignite

check to see if pressure switch wires are tight and pressure to pressure switch then check safety circuit make sure wires to gas valve are tight

I changed the thermo coupler and the pilot light does stay lit but the burners won't light

If you are referring to a gas fireplace:

  • Make sure the pilot knob is turned from "pilot" to "ON" or it will never run.
  • If the pilot knob is "ON", and the pilot is lit, but the burner won't light, it could be a bad Thermopile. The thermopile is the other safety mechanism in the pilot assembly that controls the burner.

How do i light pilot light?

Remove front cover,or just lower section if you can. they usually just need to be lifted up about an inch or so and pulled out. However some have covers that snap in place. After you remove cover locate gas valve. It should have a control knob on top with markings for on, off, and pilot. Set control to pilot. Follow lines from gas valve to burner compartment, one goes to main burner one ,small copper colored line is the thermocouple, other line is the pilot. Turn thermostat down as far as it will go. Make sure gas supply valve in line to heater is on and then depress pilot control , when you have pilot control depressed have a match or other small flame source close to pilot assembly. If it lights then hold down on pilot control for a couple of mins. Slowly release pilot control and if it stays lit turn gas control to on. Turn thermostat up to call for heat and burner should light. If pilot doesn't stay lit when you release pilot control then try again holding pilot down longer. If it still won't stay lit then thermocouple will need replace. Good luck. Thanks

Im calling for heat from the thermastat and control panel, the boiler light and and the fan is running, but no matter how many times i keep re trying the pilot and burner will not commence, is there...

I would check to make sure control on gas valve is in on position and pilot is lit if you have a standing pilot. If you have a spark or hot surface ignitor make sure they are trying to lit pilot. If you have standing pilot model and pilot lit is not on. Turn control on gas valve to off, wait five mins. then turn to pilot. Depress botton and try to light pilot. If it lights hold down for a couple of mins. then release.. If pilot stays lit turn control to on. If thermostat is calling for heat this should bring main burner on. If pilot does not stay lit then replace thermocouple. Hope this helps. Thanks

How do i relight my standing wall heater light, where is it?

There should be a removable panel on the bottom front. Remove this panel and you should see gas valve with two lines going into combustion chamber. The larger of the two will be for burner and the smaller to the pilot light. There may be lighting instructions on the inside of panel,or on front of burner compartment. If not look at gas valve and see if you can see where it is marked off pilot and on. Turn thermostat to lowest setting and gas valve to pilot ,locate pilot light and hold match to it while you depress pilot button . Pilot should light. If it does hold button depressed for 1 to 2 mins. Release pilot button and if pilot stays lit turn valve to on. Turn thermostat up to desired setting and see if burner comes on. If it does you should be done. Put cover back on. If pilot light does not stay lit or burner won't light I Would recommend you call a service tech as there are several things that could be wrong. Hope this helps you. Thanks

Pilot won't stay lit

Possible thermocouple is defective. The thermocouple is heated by the pilot itself, the theory behind this safety design is so the main burner cannot come on, if the thermocouple won't stay hot, it reduces the chance for a huge gas buildup in the burner compartment and possible explosion.

I have also seen cases a pilot would not stay lit if the flue for the heater is blocked by a spider web, bird nest or other obstruction.

Check and make sure the flue/vent is absolutely clean and clear, if it is, then the thermocouple may be defective. If you have an electric pigtail on the thermocouple, the problem may be the electronics or circuit board.

My Gas pilot light will not stay lit. If I take my hand off the ignition swithch it goes out. I have had the theromostat replaced but, the same thing happens.

You probably have a bad thermocouple/pilot generator. This is a tube that is in the pilot flame when the pilot is lit. If the gas valve doesn't get a good reading from it, the gas valve won't allow ant flow. They are easy to replace, a thermocouple has a copper tube that inserts into the body of the gas valve, a pilot generator has two wire leads. The gas MUST be turned off while you change it out. If it's a tube type (thermocouple), be careful not to kink the copper tube during installation.
