Generally you will find soil and string of some sort wrapped around the drive spool. Make sure you unplug it before starting and it might be quite hot.

If the belts are good and not slipping, the noise could be a bearing issue.

Hello,

You could have a broken fan in the motor and need to replace the fan. If the noise is coming from the brush area of the vacuum, you probably have a broken bearing in your brush roller and would need to replace the brush itself.

Hope this helps.

That is an indication that the belts are worn, stretched or broken. You simply need to replace the belt. Here is a link to the belt(s) you need and a manual you can view:

Makes a loud noise like a grinding noise then smokes comes out and it smells like burning rubber? When I take the (rod) brush off with the belt then run the vacuum there is no more noise? Please help me...

Your belt is worn and stretched and so it is slipping on the motor drive shaft. That is why it is noisy and smells like burning rubber. You simply need to replace the belt. You can get replacement belts here:

Vacuum making loud noise

It could be 1 of 3 things:

1. The belt2_bing.gif that drives the beater bar. (Inexpensive)

2. An impeller that has a broken wing or 2, throwing it off balance. (Expensive)

3. Or, the bearings in the motor are going out. (Expensive)

Hope this helps,

Has started making a rhythmic noise, not too loud. Maybe a belt?

Excellent question and description.
Generally a belt with a broken tooth will rattle like a machine gun if defective. Simply lay the had upside down. You can also inspect for hair and thread wrapped around the end of the brush roll. If you remove the belt turn it inside out to roll between your fingers for inspection. Look for signs of fraying or cracking. be sure to check your tension when reinstalling, there should be a bit of slack but not enough to let the belt slip if you were to jam the brush with a hand or old sock

Vacuum is making a loud noise

Is the smell rubber or electrical. If rubber then the belt is slipping and needs to be replaced, they stretch after awhile. Also is the brush roll turning freely, or is it bound up, it may have to be replaced. If the smell is electrical, then probably the motor is going bad and will have to be replaced.

Suden loud noise when vacuming carpet

Hi.

Check that brush roller (beater bar) is free to turn with no obstruction.
If it is still noisey after doing this try this site for Dyson repair manuals.
