Check the cable, try a new cable or one you know that works. They are notorious for breaking down. Also check that you have the devices set for slave/master. If they are both set for the same they will not be recognized.

Does not show up in my computer when I plug it in and turn it on. Computer says it is installed, but I can not find the drive.

Same like my previous post. 1st of all, check your PC is it has 2 HD or not, if there are 2 HD then make sure 1 is set to Master and another 1 is Slave or Cable Select. If there is only 1 HD, then have to set it to Master.
After this, enter the BIOS to see whether the PC can locate the installed HD or not.
If it is not, then make sure the HD is connected single with IDE cable (do not share with CD-ROM or the other HD, if it is share the unplug the other 1).
If the problem still then may be u can check the HD either is still functional, find a IDE to USB converter in computer shop and connect your HD to your PC and see either the HD can be detected or not as an external HD. If no, then the worst case show your HD is spoil already.

Computer not reading the hard drives or cd rom drives

You first need to make sure that inside, the hard drives and cd roms' connectors are all firmly seated.

When you first turn on your PC, you can normally enter the BIOS mode, (before windows) by pressing the del key or f2 key. Once there you can make sure that the drives are being recognized. If they are, you would need to go to the boot section and enable hard drives and cdroms.

If they are not recognized,
Old IDE hard-drives (the ones with lots of pins on the back) (newer ones are called SATA and have plastic connectors) .. Old ide hard drives had a special jumper (little plastic rectangle on two pins) to indicate if it would run as a master or a slave drive. So your two drives should be connected accordingly.

If all the above sounds too complicated you would need to contact a friend savvy in the area.

Ecs 6100sm-m mobo connections

you have a few options

1) buy a sata harddrive (faster then ide), use the ide for the second harddrive (backup) and cd/dvd rom

2) buy a sata cd/dvd rom use the ide on both harddrives (1 set to slave)

3) depends on your budget, buy a sata drive + sata cd/dvd rom so your main drive is on sata (faster than ide) then you only have your second drive as your backup drive on ide.

i had the same problem when i rebuilt mine, i went for the seperate harddrive and cd/dvd rom and my 320 gb ide as my backup drive

sorry to jump on this post aswell, see what others think

Dell Dimension 8200 turns off in BIOS

If the dianostic lights A & D are yellow an IDE bus failure has occurred. Reseat the IDE cables at the motherboard and drive(s). If this does not resolve the issue you may need to contact Dell for a motherboard repair or replacement.

My computer wont let me install OS

You have to reboot and tap F2 to go to BIOS select option to enable the Secondary controller and to detect the proper IDE Devices?

Also make sure the IDE cable is firmly attached and the you have pin 1 alligned properly at all 2 (or3) connectors. And if you have 2 IDE devices attached make sure one jumper ( in HD or CD ) is set to master and the other to slave.

If none of this works, try a known good CD rom drive that you can try and try switching with a known good cable.

Once the system recognize the CD ROM youre set to go !

Burner problems

First check if device is recognised in bios, if it is then you need to fixwindows. If you cannot see cd unit in bios then check that slave/master / cable bridge settings at back of cd are fine.In this case the fastest way to test your unit is to connect it as single unit with a tested ide cable on the computer, just to test it. On the other channel you connect the hd. Eventually switch channels and cables between hd and cd.

SCSI and IDE HDs, can they work together?

This next solution is viable in win 98, and I don?t see any reason why it shouldn?t work for you too. If you know of anything I?m missing you should consult someone else. The solution is slightly complex, so I hope I can explain it properly: 1. Create a startup disk so you can format and install windows. 2. Set the new HD as master and connect it to Primary IDE. 3. Disconnect the SCSI and remove it. 4. Restart the computer with the disk you created (with the new HD connected). 5. Go to the Bios settings in order to make sure that the computer does recognize the new HD as the primary drive in the first IDE. 6. Now, FDisk the new HD, set the partitions, restart and format it. Install the OS and make sure it is working properly. 7. Insert the SCSI and restart again. 8. At this stage the computer would reboot into the IDE and see the SCSI/ You may have to change something in the OS settings for that, but I don?t know where. Good luck.
