Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Dayton torpedo heater blowing flames

Kerosene torpedo heater is blowing flame out past the heater plate and guard, and is blowing black smoke. I opened it up and turned down the amount of fuel, but when I got it down to the point that it wouldn't blow flames out, it stalled, and would not re-ignite. I just bought it brand new at an equipment auction so I can't exactly return it.

SOURCE: Dayton Infrared natural gas heater ignition/flame sensor

Yes, the flame sensor is part of the intermittent pilot assembly. Check the following: make sure all grounding wires are secure and no corrosion is built up on them. Clean or replace the pilot assembly, also clean out the orifice with a very small drill. Make sure the sensor is in the flame and make sure the pilot tube is not leaking gas reducing the gas pressure at the pilot.

If it continues, you will have to replace the ignition control.

SOURCE: when i turn on the heater it just blows smoke

if the unit has a high voltage transformer that ignites the flame. ie it has a heavier wire plugged into a spark plug or igniter. the coil is likely bad..... it should arc as soon as it is turned on. later models have a heater that gets very , cherry red, hot and that ignites the fuel. take the top cover off and you should be able to identify which you have. coil sets right under fan. one heavy wire and two light wires as the primary. light wires at about 12 ohms and heavy wire to chassis in the k ohms.

SOURCE: Won't ignite and fill the entire tube with flame, cold air, smoke

The deisel fuel hogged it up. Clean everything out and replace the wick. Deisel fuel is filthy to burn and it needs a lot of airflow.

My Dayton 110,000 btu kerosene torpedo heater... The fan kicks on for a couple secs then kicks off it seems as it's not getting any fuel what should I do

Could be the Flame out sensor cutting the power to the electrics and therefore the forced air fan. It forces the heater to shut off should the flame extinguish. It might also be the temperature limit control which also turns the heater off if the internal temperature rises to an unsafe level. If either of these two possibilities the unit may need a service.
